Central and South American Travels
Hello everybody back home!
Although it´s hard to summon the energy to update this blog towards the end, we have decided to go for it! Only an english piece, so the danes will have to read this too!
We spent two weeks in Buenos Aires (BA) after arriving from Patagonia. It was a pleasant change in climate, no more Patagonian winds, but we soon missed them in the heat - for two weeks we had temperatures around 35 degrees, coupled with 70% humidity!
Our main objective in BA from the beginning of our trip was to volunteer with L.I.F.E organisation. We only had two weeks in BA and therefore not enough time to really get into it. Also, we realised that volunteering at the end of a six month long trip, wasn´t the right thing to do, as we barely had the energy to get ourselves involved in the project. That said, it was an amazing experience to work with the lesser privileged children in the `shanty towns` of BA. Alot of these children are homeless or only have one parent. Alot of the adult community in these areas are heavily involved in drug problems and are out of work. One particular place, thousands of people lived in an unfinished hospital building, only a cement-skeleton! The project also enabled us to see these areas of BA as outsiders, places that normally would be extremely dangerous/impossible to go to.
Our involvment in L.I.F.E secured us a private room with the family who founded the organisation. We stayed in a lovely and central area of BA and really enjoyed the company in the house! One of the reasons that we didn´t found the time to volunteer, was that there´s so much to see and do in BA. It is without a doubt the most exciting city we have been to in Central and South America!
After a week in the city, we were joined by another Corcoran. Andy from London found the time inbetween jobs to come and join us (and he is still with us as we speak!) Andy only on a three week holiday has made sure to kickstart the end of Charlie and I´s trip, so we wouldn´t be bored! A big part of BA´s sights is its nightlife and fabulous restaurants! We visited a good few of them, the most memorable was Las Lilas, serving the best baby steak we have ever had, and Olsen, serving danish food and drinks SNAPS!!, which I of course have craved for ages now!!
We also managed to score tickets to one of the worlds most famous football teams. Boca Juniors in BA. We went to watch a match and were not disappointed! The game, not premier league standard, was alright, but what really impressed us was watching the crowds at the famous stadium called La Bombonera (the chocolate box!) They sing and jump for all 90 minutes, making the construction move 5 centimeters back and forth - Fantastic!
We were all sad to leave BA, but a first class sleeping bus (impressing Andy!) took us smoothly to northwestern Argentina and the world famous Iguazu falls. These waterfalls, dividing Argentina and Brazil, are the biggest and the most powerful in the world. Surrounding the falls are lush jungle with toucans and hundreds of butterflies! A most special adventure came that Andy surprised us with a private helicopter tour over the falls - Truely amazing!!! (THANK YOU ANDY!!) Besides from observing the falls from walkways, we also took a boat that soaked us under some of the smaller waterfalls (still huge!!), sailing close to the thundering water while rainbows are hanging right above your head in the mist from the falls. We got to see this wonder of nature from above and beneath, and from both Brazil and Argentina. All in two days time, pretty impressive, considering the size of them.
The last update will probably come from back home. Here we will tell about lovely Ilha Grande and naturally Rio, where we are currently situated!!!
Best wishes to all and see you in four days
Charlie and Anders and Andy too :)
