OK...so I am back in Cheng du...it's kinda like deja vu..and really nothing is new. He he well, I thought it was funny, it could be due to the sleep deprivation though. Alright let's back track a bit. So, I was in Shangri La. A beautiful place filled with tibetan people, monks and yaks. I loved it. Honestly one of my favorite places so far. And the freezing mountain air reminded me of home. I got to try the famous yak butter tea. Yep that about describes the taste. We had the salty version which reminded me of melted salty butter. There is also a sweet version, which I imagine tastes more like shortbread. So if ever you have to make the choice go for the sweet one! There was also a huge acting tibetan monastary just out of town. Full of monks, with cell phones, and driving 4 by 4 Jeeps! Hey they have to keep up with the times too! At least they still wear those robes.
We had to head back to Lijiang in order to back track and catch an early bus to Panjiwah (no that's not the correct spelling but that's the way it sounds) And from there we had to get a train to Cheng du. (wee traveling!) In Lijiang we (the we would be Martias, Evy and I) Met up with an american and headed off to a late dinner. Now, this is when I learned somthing new about Martias...he has an obsession with uniforms (don't we all) and somehow convinced our cook to let him try it on. And from there we got invited back into the kitchen and shown around. Much fun was had and Martias got to walk away with the hat, and I got a picture of the chef in a tibetan outfit...go fig?
Now, the bus to Panjiwah... it is a "8hr" (really 10 to 11) bus ride, over the most convoluted route, going up and down through narrow roads in the mountains. Oh and did I mention that the roads aren't actually "roads" as we know them? They were cobble stones!, and loose gravel! Add to that there were four kids on the bus as well...asian kids get car sick REALLY easy! There were three pails along the aisle when I got on the bus..that should have clued me in. All of the kids were sick within the first 2 hours of travel, and we all just kept on going, don't bother emptying the pails or anything! And Evy actually had one throw up on her! It was unpleasant...
Ok so after that ride from hell, we stayed over night and took a 12 hr train to Cheng du! First thing we did here? PANDAS!!!! The breeding center is just outside of town and we saw cute, adorable, pandas, from adults all the way to hairless babies still in the incubators! There were three really small ones, and they all had the hiccups! Too cute! Also, went to see the worlds largest Buddha in Leshan...it was well...it was big, what else can I say? In Cheng Du, fast food places also tend to congregate. Every few blocks there is a "fast food corner". Literally, there is a KFC, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and a Dico's (like a KFC) at a cross roads. Always those 4 chains...it's kinda scary. So, from here we all went our own ways. Martias back to Canada, Evy to Belgium, and me up to Songpan. But it is now midnight and I need to sleep. Until next Blog folks!
