Finally! After flying for 14.5hrs. Having a stopover in Dubai for 6hrs then another 8hr flight, I was VERY glad to be somewhere I could sleep on a bed in a room! I got off the plane @ Johannesburg, collected my luggage & made my way out to find a taxi ASAP, I was stuffed. As I walked out a ported grabbed my stuff & said he'd lead me to the free shuttles to my hotel. I was too tired to think so I just followed. It was fine until we were walked through a dark, deserted ally & I got a little scared, I'll admit. But nothing happened, and we were shortly at the shuttle buses. I was almost falling asleep as we were walking & he said I had to tip him! This would have been fine, IF I had asked for his damn help. He said a good $20US which I just handed over because I was very stupid. I think back now and get so angry how he just completely ripped me off! I was a very tired female traveller, a perfect target! Well I'm not a perfect target anymore, I don't even want to look at porters! I am very capable of handling my own damn luggage! And then it turns out he had LIED to me, the shuttles weren't free! Argh, I swear, if I ever meet him again... /rant over
ANYWAY, as we drove to my hotel, I noticed South Africa is very westernised. It didn't look too much different to what I was used to, which was disappointing. I would soon find out most major cities look like that, it's the villages that are totally different. We only drove for about 5mins, which I was super happy about. I checked in, found my room, showered & crashed. I slept for a solid 13hrs until my alarm woke me in the morning. It was glorious. I headed down to my included buffet breakfast and almost died at the sight. The entire service section of the restaurant was full of food! From your usual bacon, eggs, sausages, tomato, mushroom to pastries & muffins to cold meats such as salmon, silverside, ham, chicken, duck to every sort of cheese you can imagine to fruits! It was insane! I've never seen a breakfast spread quite like it! I had to pace myself if I wanted to try everything. I only managed two plates :(
After I checked out, I sat in the lobby waiting for my transfer reading the newspaper, when I get bought over a fresh orange juice & a muffin for me to take away. The service was lovely! Maybe the airport staff should get some tips... I was then on my way to Livingstone in Zambia where I would start my trip!
