hey everyone!
We're sat in Singapore airport at the moment with 16 hours to go until we take off for perth! We were only waiting around in Singapore so decided so save a bit of money and stay over at the airport as our flight is tomorrow morning.
We arrived in Singapore on Friday the 8th of Feb. We left Kuala Lumpur at 9.30am after a heavy last night out with rich on the thursday! We were told we would arrive at 2.30pm, but after the border crossing and everything it was 5.30 by the time we arrived into Singapore. We then walked to Little India and called into all of the hostels. Every one we went to said they were full and we really started to panic! Luckily we called into Prince of Wales hostel, which we had been told was definately full, and they had 2 more beds in the girls dorms! By that time it was around 7 so we were so relieved! We spent that evening wandering around the streets trying to get our bearings.
On the Saturday we started our walking mission around Singapore! We had decided that as we had so much time in Singapore we would walk everywhere and not take any transport unless we went out of town! We walked to the Marina to see the merlion lion fountain, and then walked down and around Chinatown. We looked at loads of shops for a camera for Amy and finally found a good deal in Sim Lim square. In the evening we walked to the main night life area Clarke Quay. Stopped for a curry on the way! We wandered around the quay for a while, which has over 60 food and beverage outlets, my favourite being the clinic where everyone sits in wheelchairs or hospital beds and drinks are given out in drips! We had our first glass of wine of the trip in Bungy Bar as they were playing the Wales v Scotland Rugby. We then finished off the tiring day by walking home!
We spent the Sunday walking down Orchard Road, the main shopping road. I don't know why one place needs so many shopping malls, but i know i'd be going mad if i was out here on holiday or if i had an inch of space left in my rucksack! We then walked all the way to the Orchid Gardens, but we were so tired by the time we got there we didn't really see it all! We went to the main gardens though, and we thought it would all be a bit same same! We then walked all the way back to the hostel! We went out for dinner to an indian vegetarian restaurant with Karen, a gril from our dorm, in the evening. We didnt know what anything was so we asked them to give us a bit of their favourites on a budget! The food was amazing! So good that me and Amy went back there every day since.
WE spent Monday at the zoo, which was a lot bigger than I thought it would be. We saw all of the shows and got really close to the orangutans. I dont know what they were feeding the animals that day but we seemed to see a lot of obvious willies at most of the exhibits! It was quite disturbing but amy enjoyed testing out her new camera!! I was proud of us, when we left the zoo there was a minibus going straight to little india, but as it was 80c more expensive we decided to do the long route on the bus and tube! WE had such a good evening on Monday. We had some dinner at the veg restaurant and then got dressed up to go to the Raffles Hotel. I stopped before we sat down as there were penut shells all over the floor and i thought they were going to be cleared up, but then amy pointed out to me that it was all for effect and they were just chucking all the used shells on the floor!! We both ordered a Singapore Sling (of course), and managed to drag it out for over an hour. I dont think I've ever sipped so slowly on a cocktail before, but when I'm paying for it I made sure it lasted!! We did manage to get a free cocktail each though. The barmen called us up to the bar to test 2 promotional cocktails, to choose the bast and to describe it. They then let us keep them. At $20 a cocktail we didn't do too badly!
Yesterday we took the Tube to the Habourfront and took the Cable car to Mount Fabar ( this was one time we decided not to walk!!) From here we could see views over singapore. We then took the cable car over to Sentosa Island, just south of singapore. The island was so pretty and there were flowers everywhere for the Chinese New Year. As transport on the island was free we took the tram around the island. We then walked to the southernmost point of Continental Asia. After this we did a nature trail back to the cable car, and then the tube back to the hostel!
Had a really good time in Singapore and it was a lot nicer than I imagined it would be. People are so polite and everythings so clean! Find it a bit weird chewing gums banned there though, but i suppose its a way of keeping it clean. Anywho, the internet is free here so there's a bit of a queue! Hope everyone is well, keep us updated with the goings on a at home.
Will update again in Perth next week!
Love to all, bec xxxxxxxxx
