The past two weeks have been filled with a host of exciting events- a power outage, a warm reunion, a performance in Chelsea, and a Thanksgiving potluck with some great friends!
On the night of the 19th of November my flatmate, Stephanie and I experienced some unexpected difficulties when we heard a popping buzz and then found ourselves lost in the darkness of our flat. Fortunately, power had not gone out in the whole building and we were able to camp out in the hallway outside of our flat in order to charge our computers while we worked on our assessments. When the maintenance man came by we found that our legs had fallen alseep or- as Stephanie tells me the saying is in Greece- we had "ants in our blood." The whole ordeal was resolved in less than two hours!
The following few days brought a much anticipated visit from Roy and Rosanna Strausbaugh as they made their way from France through London before flying back to the United States- dinner at the Gay Hussar the evening they arrived and fellowship in the British Museum that Friday afternoon! Thank you so much for making my week absolutely lovely!
After spending a delightful evening/afternoon with the Strausbaugh's, I prepared for the evening's performance with the UCLU Symphony Orchestra at St. Mary's in Chelsea. The program for the concert included:
Cherubini Requiem
Verdi- Preludes to Act 1 and 3 of La Traviata
Puccini- "Crisantemi"
On the 24th of November, I enjoyed hosting a Thanksgiving Potluck with two friends, Sarah and Ylonna, at my flat. The most elusive of all necessities were fresh cranberries for homemade cranberry sauce, one of the most essential aspects of the Thanksgiving meal (at least for me!!). Luckily enough, cranberries surfaced just in time as UK Christmas supplies invaded the grocery...Despite such hardships we supplied the essentials: stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and two huge turkeys - one of which had to be cooked in an oven a few flats down the street! While preparing the turkey, we smeared mayonaise on the outside to give it a golden skin and keep the meat tender, commenting that it reminded us of lathering suntan on a strange child! Everyone who came (about 25-30 people) brought a delicious side, dessert, or wine to share. Afterwards the abundance of leftovers has provided for some great post-Thanksgiving meals. It was the perfect way to share and celebrate Thanksgiving away from home!
The weekend following Thanksgiving brought the penultimate museum visit of the Museum Studies program- a trip to the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. While there wasn't a chance to explore Portsmouth, there was the opportunity to go aboard the HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, as well as into the storehouses of the museum which were filled with pieces of maritime history.
A little over two weeks until I return to the states for the holidays!!
