The lovely month of May has brought many more adventures, traveling, and visitors. Showers from the beginning of the month produced a double rainbow in the middle of Bloomsbury and scores of brightly colored flowers including a display of daffodils in Greenwich.
Adventures around the city have included excursions to Kensington Gardens and Palace (where we walked the "wobbly walk"), a Mexican style birthday dinner, and paying respects to at Lady Thatcher's funeral procession. I have also been assisting with an installation at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University. I was invited to come by the curator, Dr. Sally-Ann Ashton whose exhibition concerns Afro-hair and combs throughout history. While there, I not only assisted in pre-installation work, including a close brush with death thanks to a 7ft glass door, but spent time with the wonderfully warm Orwin family! The girls- Lucille and Camille provided both me and Ambrose endless hours of entertaining company. As installation will continue throughout the coming weeks, I will be returning to assist as I can!
After this brief visit to Cambridge, I returned in order to prepare for my honorary Irish visitor, Rachel. Upon her arrival we took in many of London's trademark views including Big Ben, the Eye, Hyde Park, and Buckingham Palace. The next day included shopping in Camden Town Market, museum-ing in the V&A, and an extraordinary production of La Boheme by the English National Opera in which Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard, and Colline engage in baguette dueling and pillow combat! Other highlights of her visit included having a cuppa in the Twinnings tea room, seeing Les Miserables, exploring Victoria Revealed, tracking down the TARDIS, and walking on Abbey Road whilst waving to our families who were watching via live webcam. Since Rachel's visit, there has been little excitement in London excluding two experiences: the Ben and Jerry's Moosical and running rampant in the largest toy store I have ever seen. After Rachel's departure I received a text from Amy, a friend with tickets to an event which advertised free Ben and Jerry's, moosic, and audience participation. The ice cream was delicious and the night even included a cow dance! A few days later proved to be a day of Oxford Street shopping...well, mostly window shopping with Sarah. The best part of the outing was exploring the 6 levels of Hamley's toy story, particularly the Lego section containing life-sized plastic incarnations of the royal family.
Without Rachel, dancing cows, or giant Lego feats of engineering to distract me anymore, its time to buckle down and get some work done as I anxiously await the arrival of yet more visitors: THE HERRERAS! Back up to Cambridge today. Can't wait to see what progress has been made with the installation!
