We are done, we finished our placements at the end of last week. My morning placement with the girls in the safehouse finished on Thursday and it was sad saying lots of goodbyes but some other volunteers have arrived to pick up where i finished so at least i know they have something new to look forward to. On the last day at Johns placement in the clinic the volunteers arranged to take the children to the zoo. So lots of extra volunteers were recruited, including myself and all armed with one child in a wheelchair off we went. The zoo was a small very un wheelchair friendly place but the kids loved it. They got to see bears, pumas, condors and monkeys and it really was a lovely morning with all the children, a nice way for John to end his placement. Our afternoon project was also more goodbyes to lots of cute little children who we have loved working with, they made us cards and made speeches and some even came out and sang us a good bye song - very cute!
So with our placements over off to Machu Picchu on our 4 day alternative trek we went. The first day was mountain biking, which was wicked. we rode for hours and all down hill and all in the rain, we could not have been wetter or muddier but it just added to the fun of the day, it was fast and bumpy and on the side of a mountain - brilliant. Day 2 was a trekking day we walked for 8 hours passing through some jungle and even walking on the original Inca Trail for a short part too. The scenery was amazing and a few steep climbs up the mountains gave us fantastic views. We finished the day at natural hot springs which was perfect, just what our tired feet and limbs needed. Day 3 was trekking along a railway line for hours - in the rain, not the funnest day but it got us to where we needed to be so cannot complain. Day 4 we got up at 3.30am to climb up to machu Picchu. It was a hard climb in the dark and in the wet clouds but well worth it.Machu Picchu was amazing, it looks exactly like every picture you see but it was still very impressive to actually be there.
Having eventually got back to cusco we celebrated our final night here with all of our cusco buddies and had some drinks and did some dancing.
We leave here on an overnight bus tonight and are heading to Bolivia via Puno and Lake Titicaca, we are kind of sad to be leaving as this place has been home for over 2 months and all the people we are leaving behind but we know we have so much more to see and do so we are not that sad.
Anyway lots of love to you all and next time we write we should be in Bolivia - how exciting xxx
