Hola amigos
hear you have snow back home - brilliant very xmasy! still warm here in 20s everyday day and little rain some evenings
been busy as usual on the projects and as you can see from the photos we went rafting weekend before last for the day. was only a hour away and was brilliant - nearly fell in a few times which was funny and when aly was in the front think the waves were going over her head. our instructor found it very funny everytime she screamed as we hit another rapid.
also we have finally eaten guinea pig! - its bit greasy and stringy - its what you{d expect to be honest but its good to have tried it, though it comes out whole and even I couldnt eat the heart and any of the head, aly wasnt to happy about the claws and the teeth still being there.
we went to arequipa this weekend which is the 2nd city of peru. took an overnight bus which took 10 hours but the seats are good and got a fair amount of sleep. went round the monestry which is like a city in itself and was only opened to the public in 1970 after nobody being allowed in since it was built about 350 years ago - very interesting.
also we went to a museum that holds the frozen preserved body of an inca girl discovered in the 90{s - she was a sacrifice at the top of a mountain in inca times and was frozen for centuries then climbers discovered her after the ice melted - skin and hair all in tact with clothes
anyway we had 1 day in arequipa then we were up at 3am the next day and travelled 3 hours to colca canyon (2nd deepest in the world - deepest the next canyon along) colca twice the depth of the grand canyon. we went on a 3 day 2 night trek which is brilliant fun. while on the trek we saw condors and for 2 nights slept in mud huts. walked about 8 k each day finishing in a 5am wake up on the 3rd day and 2 hour climb out of the canyon - we both did it fine and amazingly dont ache to bad
only a week till xmas so if we cant jump on here again before then hope you all have a great one and eat and drink loads.
love John & Aly
Ps. the project we attend in the afternoon is having a xmas party tomorrow afternoon and as part of the celebrations they are performing a nativity play. somehow ive been roped into being father xmas for the day and aly is in the choir for the singing bits - im not sure peru is ready for it. we will try to get pictures over soon
