I can say with my hand on heart that Koh Samui is a truly beautiful island now that we have been exploring it properly. We hired a bike known as "The Beast" (by James) and have spent the last week admiring its beauty. Scattered around the main roads are many spa's and well being centres where if you want to come and enjoy being pampered to the hilt, then samui is your place to be. Once james felt comfortable driving the beast we ventured a bit more inland and the more scenic back roads. James had suggesred we get a bike each but i would only be able to go in one direction, foward so we shared a bike. James the driver of course. Not sure whether you actually need a license here as some of the bike drivers do not look old enough at all.
The main roads are inrteresting enough at first especially going past all the "honey" bars as i like to call them. Night or day the Thai girls sit outside in the sunshine retouching their already immacualte make-up and shouting at western men to go in their bar for a drink - pedestrians and motorists alike. And watching the streams of Dennis Hopper wannabe's riding past beaming at the attention is even funnier.
Once James had found his feet with directions we decided to really explore and thi is when I truly fell in love with this tiny Island. It takles about 2 hours to get around the island using the coastal roads but we spent hours amidst the lucious jungle enjoying the tranquility and the beauty all around us. Sleepy mountains embrace the jungle and when we found a place called Bang Kao, we were both lost for words. We loved it that much we went back day after day if not to cruise the destered roads to look for properties to rent maybe in the future........(If you want to share this experienbce please send cheque payable to.............. we promise we will put you up)
By accident we found the tiger zoo and aquarium and wewre just in time for the sealion show where i could not hold my laughter as we were introduced to Lisa the sealion (and Miss Peggy & Mr Hammond) seriously who comes up with these names. After a very delightful half hours entertainment we went to see the aquarium which as these places go was very good. We came out just as the Tiger and Bird show were starting.
James was more enthusiastic about parrots on bikes than most of the kids in there (noted, we were even on front row) and i have to salute the trainers at this place. After the birds hjad finished it was time for the tiger show. The trainer was named Mr T and he wore a bandana covering his head. i am convinced this was because his lack of hair after being mauled by a tiger or out of sheer fright. These arent called "Big Cats" for nothing, these beautys were huge. they were coaxed into begging like dogs by a piece of meat on a stick and jumping through burning hoops. Who TF trains tigers to do this and when did these beasts obey. it was amazing and only a short show as this isnt a cruel zoo. My favourite bit was the otter show and afterwards i got to hold one. I now want a pet otter but james isnt liking the idea. the trip if you ever get here is brilliant and really worth the time out of your sun soaked day. You can stay in the resort here which is idyllic and another possiblity for us in the future.
Anyways, will up-date with another blog in a mo
