Happy new year everyone, apols for the delay in blogging we have been busy moving into our studio apt, drinking, eating, relaxing and sunbathing - very tough its been too...
We arrived a couple of days before New Years eve after a totally knackering trip! a brief one stop in Phuket after flying from HK we were up early to catch the bus to Samui. We just missed the 10am as it was full so sat in a bus station thai cafe for a snack - had forgotten just how spicey real thai food is, this cafe was for bus drivers and taxi drivers not tourists - frikking hot!
We caught the 12pm bus to Surat Thani (holy cow it was a badass journey) it was a local bus so we were crammed full of thais - at one point there were 4 people on our 2 seats! the driver thought he was schumaker and we seemed to stop at random to squeeze even more school kids, farmers, etc on. We eventually arrived at Surat Thani and then had to catch another coach to the ferry pier - we were only just squeezed onto this as we were the last to get a ticket. at last we made the 7pm ferry and hit the beach of KS at 8.30pm we were then squeezed into a Songtheaw (pickup truck/taxi) to take us to our Apt. finally at 10pm the pickup driver found our place and we checked in. Desperate for a beer I dragged ally out and wandered, quite by accident, to the red light street for a drink.
We are settled in now and love our little studio, with its own balcony catching the late afternoon sun and a family gekkos to keep us amused catching the evil mozzies! The sun has been cracking the flags the last 2 days, prior to that it has been very cloudy and thunderstorms at night, temperatures had struggled to get up to 30, we even had to wear our rain coats one night!
We have found the best pub in Indochina! The Duke Pub on Chaweng Beach Road, the house band plays every night from 8pm to midnight, Powerful is the name of the group, and they play what can only be described as quality Hard Rock music - Deep Purple, Stones, Zepplin, Doors, Rainbow, actually everything I used to listen to as a teenager - and brilliant they are (if a little dodgy in the pronunciation of lyrics) there also appears to be an unlimited number of band members as each night we go there is a slkightly different line up! there are a couple of members who always play - Bill Adama (Edward James Olmos), Thailands Ozzie Osbourne and Ghengis Khan - photo evidence to follow!!!
ashamedly we are already regulars - last night we walked in and the waitress knew ... 'Pint of Tiger and an Absolute Strawberry with Sprite?" FYI Pint of Tiger , Singha, Chang all 99 baht (£2) and a knee wobbler of a measure of spirits is 160 (£3)
PS I dont drink Chang coz they sponser the Shyte and bizarrely Singha have Chelsea adverts all over them - disgusting
