The Rocks in Sydney seems to be Sydneys only proper pubs/bars. There are many eateries which sell alcohol but actual pubs are not really found here. And suburban pubs are not really for "sheila's".
The Australian Hotel (bar) sits at the top of The Rocks, home to Australia's oldest and liveliest pubs and this is where we met with Wyn, Pete and their son Carl. These are childhood friends of James's mum and dad who moved to Sydney over 20 years ago. They reminisced about Cash parties from yesteryear and we shared stories from our adventure so far. They told us how lucky we were to have seen any wild kangaroo's at all and we agreed whilst James ordered the kangaroo pizza for tea. The Australian does some amazing pizza's and in true Aussie style Roo was on the menu along with BBq Emu and saltwater crocodile. And yes the "make it snappy" and "hop to it" jokes came out when ordering. We had a lovely couple of hours and when they left, James and I continued on a little pub crawl. We found INXS playing on the jukebox in the next pub which was fitting as it was just yards away from where Michael Hutchinsons funeral took place.
The next day we spent it exploring Sydney City Centre by foot which in my opinion is the best way to do it. Their underground system is efficient but in need of an up-date. Hardly any of the trains are air conditioned which in the Sydney heat is unbearable and a lot of the carriages are littered and full of graffiti. We covered some miles walking around the harbour, botanic gardens and through the city to Darling Harbour and back again.
The temperature had dropped them last few days to a managable 26C but come Friday it was back to 35C. because we loved it so much the first time, James and I took ourselves off to Watsons Bay again for lunch at Doyles. This is fast becoming our favourite restaurant in the world. James went for the seafood platter again and I ordered "Doyles famous fish n chips". Its on a par with Steve's Chippy but the fish is fresher as caught that very day and the setting of overlooking a small, golden beach with the Sydney Skyline in the distance makes it very special. After lunch we walked around admiring the houses and how the other half live before getting the ferry back over to Sydney.
