We arrived in Sydney to a cloudless sky and the hottest heatwave since 1926. Whilst Sydney's neighbouring cities were experiencing floods and even a 500km wide cyclone, this city was sweltering in over 30C. On the weekend that followed temperatures soared to 42C, an unbelievable heat that we had to sit through during a rugby league match between The Jets, a lower league club and Russel Crowe's team South Syndey, locally known as The Rabbitohs. Not very manly Russ!!
We spent our first couple of days relaxing on Glens balcony (James friend who lived in Nottingham for a while) sipping chilled Australian wine and doing the local sights of Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
We took the ferry to Watsons Bay and sat beachfront at the fabulous Doyles Seafood Restaurant and ate cajun barrimundi and seafood platters whilst sampling a crisp, cool, white wine. There was a brief visit to The Gap, Sydneys very own suicide hotspot which is a cliff overlooking the pacific ocean and what a beatiful view it is. We strolled around local markets, visited many bars and restaurants and I took myself off to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge whilst the boys stayed in the pub. The climb took 3.5 hours and before you even start the tour you have to be kitted out in overalls, safety harness etc. Then the decent begins. Knowing that Sydney Harbour is home to sharks is a little frightening when you first start climbing the bridge and the water is all that is beneath you and the bridge but the higher you climb the fear soon goes. The view of the Sydney Skyline is reflected in the blue waters of the harbour and boats and ferries dot the waters surface. The suburbs of Kirribilli and Chatswood seem in touching distance and Luna Park Theme Park at the foot of the North End of the bridge seems tiny. My group consisted of 5 people inc;uding our climb guide so we had more time at the top of the bridge to take in the surroundings and even watch a storm in the distance. It is a very expensive tour but I loved every minute of it. Afterwards, I met the cowards, sorry boys in the Harbour View Pub for a drink before heading back to the flat for more food.
