Taronga Zoo
We couldnt come to Australia and not visit one of its zoo's, so off we set one day by ferry to Sydney Zoo.
As soon as we arrived we booked our photo with a Koala although were told you cannot hold or touch them in this particular zoo. ;0( Unfortunatly for us though when we arrived for the photo none of the Koala's wanted to participate in a photo session as they were too busy sleeping. We later heard from one of the staff that Koala's sleep up to 18 hours a day and are very fussy eaters selecting only a certain type of eucalyptus tree. They looked like little teddy bears curled around the trees sleeping. So off we went into snother section and stumbled on a Wallabie. I want one, they are that cute, one even coming over for a stroke or looking for food rather. Every animal we stumbled on seemed to be asleep and the zoo was practically empty so we had a great time capturing some good photos. We even went back to the koala section and got our photo with Bridgett one of the older bears who was a little more forthcoming than Frasier, the koala whom we were supposed to see. One of the sad bits of the zoo was visiting the Tasmanian Devils. The keeper was giving a talk about how they will be extinct in 30 years if care is not taken of these little animals. They feed on road kill as prefer their meat to be already dead which leaves them vunerable on the roads too. They also pass on infected cancer cells to each other all of the time giving them fatal tumours that leads to death.
On a brighter note the first elephant to be born at this zoo was born in November 2010 so he was out and about with the other elephants. Cute!!
Its a small and friendly zoo and there are various talks with the keepers throughout the day which makes it a little more interesting. We also caught some of the feeding times which is always a good way of catching a glimpse of the beasts. So this zoo gets a thumbs up from me.
