Today's the day I go sailing on the whitsundays... One of the 'must-dos' on the east coast where you sail out to different islands, a place called Whitehaven beach, do some snorkelling and then spend the night on a boat. I'd had to make the choice between this and a trip to Fraser island where you basically go driving and camp on an island. I decided to do the whitsundays and was told as long as the weathers good that's definitely the best option.
So, of course what do I wake up to this morning? Rain!! Great.
Anyway, I get my stuff together and head to the marina; I deliberately picked a smaller boat as didn't fancy a big party boat but I'm greeted by a Swiss family, three Germans who haven't brought any alcohol and a Scottish girl who didn't have time to buy alcohol... Definitely not a party boat then haha.
We were introduced to the skipper, a guy called John and then the first mate/cook called Scotty who had blonde dreadlocks and would definitely be nice to look at if the weather meant we had nothing else to do.
I was sharing a room with Rachel, the Scottish girl, and we went and sat at the back of the boat while everyone else sat nearer the front, all wearing our rain jackets of course!! The rain stopped but it was really windy and the boat was quite a rough ride with us all having to stay on the right side of the boat as the left side was getting really close to the sea when it rocked.
So, there I am sat on a bench at the back with Rachel sat opposite when I decide to put my hood up and as I take my hands off the railing... The boat rocks to the left and I slide all the way down the bench to the left side where luckily there was more rails to stop me falling in and then I scrambled with my feet slipping on the deck to get back to the right side of the boat... Yep, this would only happen to me! It was pretty scary but I can only imagine how funny my face was at the time and how stupid I looked.
Anyway, I never let go of that rail for the rest of the day haha.
Next stop was Whitehaven beach; and what a beautiful place it is. It's like something you see on a postcard!! Sea a pure blue with splashes of turquoise in it and sand so white that it burns your eyes as the sun reflects off it. The sand here is 98% silica and is so fine you can exfoliate your skin with it, it really was breathtaking.
I decided to go for a swim, and the water was freezing so didn't last very long.
Then the rest of the afternoon we sailed further north to a find a quieter place to sleep.
We had steak, jacket potato and veg for tea which was a nice healthyish change to my usual meals. Then they anchored the boat and a few people went to bed but me and Rachel sat up with Scotty drinking my wine and just chatted listening to music.
Then I climbed into my double bed (ooo the luxury) and fell straight to sleep because it's like being rocked to sleep haha.....
