The day after Humpy's everyone apart from myself and a few others were all going on to do the second week of the trek which goes to the south of Alaska, so I had to say bye to a group of friends I'd just spent a week with and then be left in Anchorage on my own... And as much as I loved Alaska, Anchorage is not the most fun place.
The rest of that day I felt pretty fed up and down, so I left the hostel I'd stayed at and walked to one I'd already pre booked; turns out the one I'd pre-booked was milessssss away and it took me nearly an hour to walk there.
I went to a local laundrette which was just like a typical American laundrette so was pretty cool and did my washing then spent the rest of the afternoon/evening in my room.
The hostel I was staying at was okay, but had quite a few homeless people that hung out over the road so was pretty sketchy and the room I was staying in had the oddest lock where I didn't have a key but to get in my room you just pressed a single button on the door.... Not exactly safe!!!
The next day I took a walk into town and visited the Anchorage museum which was pretty interesting but I find when you're on your own museums are never as good; although they did have a cool science area which I think was for kids but I played in there for a while and loved it haha! On the way back to the hostel I passed a Walmart and hadn't been in one yet so figured I'd go look around; holy crap it was overwhelming how big that place was and finding food just seemed impossible, everything was processed or packaged and it's all huge!!!
I headed back to the hostel and bumped into Kevin, a guy I'd briefly met checking in yesterday and he asked me if I wanted a cup of tea with him and then said he was going to the cinema later if I wanted to go with him which was a massive release as I was fed up of being on my own.
We walked down to the cinema and got tickets to see Premium Rush; Joseph Gordon Levitt's new film, and then played some pacman and air hockey before the film started. It was an okay film but nothing overly amazing and afterwards we went to a bar called mooses tooth for a pizza and a pint... Was a very typical American evening :-)
Kevin was flying to North Dakota that night so we said bye and I chilled in my room.
My last day in Alaska I decided to spend doing my favourite activity of sitting in a cinema so I went to see two films back to back... It's an addiction!! Then I went back to the hostel and ended up speaking to a guy called Ben and we watched this American tv show called workaholics together.
He mentioned that there was a storm warning for that night in Alaska and that it would be really bad around 12-2 and my flight was due to leave just before 2am but I was determined to leave Alaska. In the next few hours the rain got really bad and the heavy winds started with trees falling down and all sorts; all these Americans were running around me panicking like they'd never seen a storm before, then the power went out and there was a big bang and the lady that runs the place suddenly shouts "oh my god someone's shooting at us, everyone get inside now!" ... It was a god damn electricity box blowing and this woman is nearly ready to call the police. Totally insane!!
I called a taxi and got out of there as soon as I could, my crazy day in anchorage got even crazier when the taxi driver started telling me that when Ben helped me put my bags in the taxi he stole a light connection from the taxi... I explained that I really don't think he did, to which the taxi driver said "what the f*** is wrong with you people" I got a bit Mardy at this point, told him I didn't even know Ben and I didn't appreciate him accusing me, not the most relaxing taxi journey of my life.
Then the day got worse... My flight was delayed due to the storm, it should have left at 1:40 but we ended up leaving 5:55 so I hadn't slept at all. As I sat down on the plane I closed my eyes and the next thing I knew I opened them as we landed so that was a successful flight to Phoenix....
Got my connection to San Francisco and finally arrived!
