Day 18 - Bit of a lazy morning as only up for breakfast at 08:45. Then it was off over the bridge to the other side of town to the glasses shop as 'someone' had decided her (oops) glasses were not right after all. Saw a fella pulling an office chair by some rope over the bridge in very heavy traffic!! The guy in the glasses shop was actually more than willing to change them which I didn't expect as we didn't have a receipt or anything. Lucky he turned up on his moped just after we got there as not sure we'd have been as lucky if he wasn't there.
We were booked on a bus (saga) tour of the tombs of past emperors in the afternoon so we waited for the bus at our hotel. The pink spotty bus duly arrived with no elderly people as expected on board and off to the tombs it was. Each emperor that ruled designed their own tombs whilst they were alive so they could be buried there. One of them that we visited was as big as 15 acres and one of the others took 11 years to build! The most surprising fact at one of the tombs was it took the emperor 14 years to find the right site for his tomb. That gives you some idea of how big and grand these places are.
On route back, we took a dragon boat down the Perfume river (not sure why its called this as it doesn't smell great)!
After being dropped off river side, we made our way back to the hotel for a shower before going for some dinner. With no lunch this was very much overdue!
A short walk to Phong Nam cafe, a street food place and we ordered the spring rolls (standard), a chicken with noodles and fried beef with rice, followed by a banana and chocolate pancake. Wow!!
After dinner we decided to go and have a drink at the rooftop bar at the 5 star Imperial Hotel. We were met by 6 different members of staff, opening doors, ordering lifts for us, pulling our chairs out etc etc. I ordered a beer and Alice a coffee. The beer was, wait for it...........8 times more expensive than the exact same beer at Phong Nam!! Our two drinks cost as much as our entire meal! Worth it though as it was a pretty amazing view over the city and the Perfume River.
A 'swift' one later we wandered back to the hotel to make our strategy for our cycle ride tomorrow. With the traffic as it is, it could be an interesting experience. I think we have spent at least half an hour at one particular junction just over the bridge trying to figure out how to tackle it, watch this space!!
