Day 14 - Up at 06:30 as usual for some reason. Finally managed to get out of the (deluxe!!) room to go for breakfast and oh my god, what a breakfast. We sat at a table and were asked for the usual, tea, coffee, juice which we had, all of the above. The waitress then said there is a buffet inside. The word to describe it is, overwhelming. I think you could spent 5 days constantly eating and you wouldn't get through it all (I'm sure one of us would have a damn good go though!!). There was such a variety from fruit through to omelette to chocolate croissants, I could go on but let's just say there is about 5 courses to fit in!
Hoi An is famous for it tailors so it was decided that we should visit the shop that had been recommended by the hotel first. We were not to be disappointed! We have never seen so much fabric to choose from and any colour you could think of. We were quickly joined by a shop assistant who helped us look and pick some fabric to have a close look at. After quite a bit of deliberation, Alice has chosen a suit and a pair of pants (as they are called here, trousers to us!) and I chose a suit and a pair of pants at first.........let's just say, what a sales woman as I ended up
with a suit, 2 pairs of 'pants' and 2 shirts!!! We were both then measured from top to bottom, including inside leg, as they say!
Considering it was about 11:30 that we finished being measured, we were asked to come back at 4pm to have our first fitting which was an amazing turnaround time, I thought they meant tomorrow. The hamster must be working overtime on the wheel out back! In the meantime, we had a walk about town and we instantly noticed how touristy Hoi An is compared to what we had experienced over the last 2 weeks. We wandered round the streets admiring the mix of Chinese, Japanese and French colonial architecture - but so were coach loads of other people. This is definitely one of the stops on the Saga tour!
We had a drink (yummy mango smoothie) and a duck baguette at Mango Rooms by the river which is highly recommended and rightly so. We returned to the hotel for a bit of down time about 2:30 where I tried out the hammock in the garden area which in the end was just a piece of cloth between my bum and the floor as it wasn't designed for a fat boy like me! 4pm came around and we were eager to see our suits as was. Alice finished having her fitting whilst I had done everything except the suit jacket. I slipped it on and after about 15 minutes in the sweltering heat and with 4 people just staring at me talking in Vietnamese, I got the Slacko's like at Morgo's wedding and had to have a sit down. Basically I got the sweat on, lost my eye sight and all the colour in my face, not a pretty sight I'm sure. What followed was something out of ER as the assistant grabbed wet towels and whacked the aircon on full, too late!! After 3 attempts to get up I finally managed to get the fitting done. "you return at 7:30 for next fitting" said the assistant, oh great, as if I wasn't embarrassed enough I had to return to the lions den 3 hours later!
We checked out the recommended 'Brother's Cafe' which is in a lovely riverside location - but only for a quick drink and then a spot of dinner (I know this sounds bad when in Vietnam but..) at an Italian restaurant called 'Good Morning Vietnam' which was very very good, especially the calzone. 7pm ticked round and although 30mins early I just wanted to get it out of the way. We strolled into the tailors where my suit was not quite ready. A little wait and the jacket went back on, no dramas this time as it was on and off within 5 minutes thankfully!! Oh, by the way it felt amazing but at that point I was just glad to get out of the sahara desert of a shop! Alice's suit and 'pants' felt really good aswell and so much better than shop bought clothes at home.
On route back to the hotel, we stopped at a street seller who was selling local speciality cake, Alice tucked in!
A drink back at the hotel which we are still not sure whether we paid for as we said to put it on our room but didn't say which room or sign anything. As usual it's probably on Micky Back's, Turnill's or Fraser's tab!!
Heading to the beach tomorrow and our suits should be finished so looking forward to that!
