First full day in Luang Prabang
We arrived last night in Luang Prabang after the long but enjoyable 2 day slow boat. Having got off the boat at 18.00 we walked through the centre of town to find a hostal as all the river side accomodation was an extorshonate $30+!!! Not standing for this, two of the girls scouted out accomadation while Alice and the men looked after the bags... We eventually found a quaint hostel for 50,000 kip (about 4 pound).
Having established ourselfs in the hostel, we set out in search of refreshment - I having already mad a grand effort of consuming a 25,000 kip bottle of brandy to off-set the effects of sea sickness. Around 10 of the boat party collected by the river for dinner and we had our first taste of the Laos quisene.
Luang Prabang has a reputation for being the most Laos place in Laos, this is partly due to the efforts made by the government to protect local way of life. One of the primary effects of this is that no bars in the area has a late licence (past 23.30) except for the bowling ally 3-4km out of town. Lots of drinks, good laughs and a great night by all.
The next day nursing some sore heads we headed for the main temple in town which is located on top of Mt Phousi. From here you can see the whole of the city and enjoy the calm of the temple and its surroundings.
The city itself was lovely and quiet amoungst some of the most beautiful surroundings you are likely to see. We have booked our next leg to Vang Vieng (party capital apparently) on a minibus with the Laaads and two of the other couples we met on the slow boat. We hope that with their support and more cheap brandy we may keep our sanity during another bus journey...
