Last night we held a “party under the stars” on the rooftop of the youth house. Due to pollution and generally unclear Thailand skies, there weren’t a whole lot of stars to party under, but the view of the sunset was pretty good.
Two students I had had a lesson with earlier that day arrived announcing they’d brought me a gift. They’d brought me two bags of food. Great, anyone who knows me knows I love food, right? Well, this kind of food was a little… er… different. One bag had some kind of cooked insects, and the other had little white things which resembled a cross between huhu grubs, maggots and silk worms! What a thoughtful gift.
Between eating (not bugs!), and communicating in restricted English with the students, I got up and shared a little bit of my life story and how I’d come to know the “Father to the fatherless” (Psalm 68:5 NIV). I had to speak slowly and clearly, and stop after each phrase or sentence for a Thai woman to translate for me – that was a new experience.
A multi-choice quiz about New Zealand followed and, would you believe it, some people thought pavlova was a type of fish found in New Zealand and that we built snowmen at Christmas! Riiiiight…
Tonight our camp begins, so I probably won’t update for a while. It’s gonna be a full-on weekend!
