First of all, I didn't take the photo. Didn't get a chance to take one on my phone to upload. I'm using the computer in our dorm in Split. It seems nice enough, and there is a working air conditioner here, so we should sleep tonight.
We got into Split after a good 7 and a half hours on the same train with nothing but iPods, Scrabble and puzzle books to keep us entertained. Another minor faff to find the place, as the instructions said 'walk up the road', failing to say in which direction. Found it ok though and booked our room for 2 nights in Bol starting tomorrow. We're getting the ferry over at 10:30 in the morning, which will apparently be followed by a bus ride through the mountains.
Went out for a quick explore in Split, and realised we are now in the land of the stray cat. Loads of swifts here too, and the cats are trying to catch them. The Old Palace here has been converted into a tourist tat market, with only the bell tower being of any interest. It's 70 metres tall, and for a small fee you can go up it for panoramic views, but it was shut when we went there. The rest of Split reminded me of Rhodes, with tourist boutiques (including possibly the largest array of sunglasses in the world) and restaurants/bars taking up most of the town. Of course, we only had time to see the town centre, and apparently the beaches are good.
Had dinner in a restaurant in the main tourist square. All the restaurants here specialise in steaks and various fish-related dishes. We didn't really fancy any of this, so we had American style chicken fillets and chips. We haven't really been sampling much local cuisine since we've been out, but I did have a salami pizza in Rome, if that counts. And of course, lots of ice cream.
