28th august blog,
Today was our last day in Rome, Italy, and overseas.
Boohoo.
We woke again to the great breakfast we expect, and then got ready to leave.
We decided it would be a good idea to take the metro again, so we did, to Piazza di Spagna.
It wasn't a long walk from the metro station to the Spanish steps. They didn't look like the pictures very much because there wasn't a rainbow of flowers cascading down the middle of the double staircase.
It was at the top of the steps that we realised that there was cloud cover and it wasn't so hot as previous. There were also people selling paintings at the top of the steps.
At the Spanish step there is a fountain at the bottom and a church at the top, there are churches and cathedrals everywhere everywhere in Rome...and Europe.
So we looked through lots of little souvenir shops on the way to the Trevi Fountain, bought a couple of things..etc.
The fountain is quite nice, very big, lots of people, and lots of water. We made sure to toss a coin into it...hahaha.
The statues are cool as well, and im sure the place would look really cool under the floodlights at night.
It was only another quick walk the pantheon, where we weren't sure if the Maccas there was real or not??? it looked real dodgy, but that wasn't the reason we were there, it was to see the Pantheon, which is spectacular, it is Rome's best preserved and most complete ancient monument, from around 100AD apparently, and it looks really good on the inside, a bit run down outside, but its pretty huge.
The occulus is interesting, 9m wide it is, it would have been funny to be there in the rain for sure.
Finally after we looked around inside for a while, it is Free BTW, fitted our budget well, we walked to the Piazza Navonna.
We weren't sure where we were for a minute and then we were like ìlets go this wayî and we walked straight into the stunning elliptical square. It has three fountains of considerable size. The middle one is the largest with an obelisk making it taller. The fountain at the Northern end depicted Neptune or Posiedon slaying an octopus. That's the one Alex wanted to see.
Using the map to navigate our way back to the hotel we passed cafes and pizzerias with every step forward. We bought peaches in a SPAR and a slice of desert pie. We were closer to the hotel when we found a suitable place to buy sandwiches for lunch. Since it was only one o-clock we ate our food in the hotel and watched a movie on the laptop to wind down and then eventually started to pack and organise clothes for tomorrow.
We had dinner at a restaurant close by called Angelo. Lasagne and salmon steak were our meals, guess who had what! They were both nice and filling. We had gelato for dessert from another shop.
Our last day in Rome was over.
