So this blog is about London and I better do it now while i'm doing nothing in Fysiks class otherwise I never will.
As most of you know, I spend the last weekend in London with my Grandma before she went on her European Tour.
Thursday 13th:
Firstly I took the 5 hr train trip to København and was unfortunately sucked into paying for 5 hrs of internet so I wouldn't die of boredom. Though I did use most of it so I guess it was money well spent? It just gets taken out of my phone credit though and everytime I re-charge it's about $16 and I don't know how I make that last over a month sometimes because back home I struggled staying under $180 worth of credit. ANYWAY. This is going off topic. So I arrived in CPH and walked to my new host brothers flat where I was staying the night. He had to go to a meeting and so I spent more time on the internet. Then his room mate came home and we watched 50/50. That's a really good movie actually. Tried really hard to supress the tears and it worked. I didn't actually tell his room mate I can understand/ can speak not really Danish and so when he found out he felt stupid and then just spoke Danish. If people don't ask I don't tell. That's a bad habit but still. Woops :) Went to bed a little later than I should have since the point of me staying over was being able to get a good nights sleep and i crashed at 1am.
Friday 14th:
I caught the metro to CPH Lufthavn (airport) around 8am and then checked in etc etc. I walked through the tax free and checked in on facebook as you do. Bought a juice and then afterwards a coffee before running to the gate because I thought they were going to close and fly off without me. Though I had plenty of time and walked onto the plane and funly enough ended up sitting next to a guy from Australia. He saw me putting away my passport and from then we just chatted the whole way. He was a really nice guy who lives in Manly and plans on quitting his job to come study in Denmark. I never actually found out his name but he was the first Aussie i've met here. What are the odds? Eventually we arrived in London and parted ways. I met the mother of the family I was staying with on Friday night. (My Australian family's friends cousins. Yes complicated indeed.) Sam (the Mum) is super sweet and brought me home to a nice cup of English tea. We spoke about some similarites and differences between Aus and the UK and there are more than I expected. Such as it's normal to have your washing machine and dryer in the kitchen. We then had to do a few small jobs for the girls (Chloe and Hannah, 15 and 12) and so I saw a few of the local shops. I then bought some VEGEMITE mwahahaha and was quite content with myself. I finally met the girls after school though only for a short while because they had a dance concert that night. I met the Ian (the Dad) and he of course was also really nice. He kept laughing at me though because I was speaking with an American accent and I can't make it go away. What's happened to me!?!? That night we dropped off the girls and then drove out to Brighton. A town by the sea side and we ate dinner and walked down to the Pier where of course there was a little theme park. Hearing english around me was super weird and personally I didn't like it. I wanted to say some things in Danish but absolutely no one would understand me. Though then again i'm back here and still speaking english. I'm weird and i'm going to regret it. That's a scary thought. Overall, the night was lovely and I came home tired and full. I fell asleep in a very comfy bed with a strange cat.
Saturday 15th:
The big day! I woke up and ate toast. The real thing that comes in a plastic packet and fits in a REAL TOASTER. Haven't had that for a long long time and of course a good cup of English tea. I said bye and thanks to Ian and Sam drove me down to the local station. We waited for the train to Victoria Station and had a nice chat with a Polish train conductor. One thing I noticed in England is that everyone is super friendly and more than willing to help you. I said farvel to Sam and a really big thank you for helping me and showing me around. And so I was 30 minutes away from seeing Grandma. On the train I was sitting across from a really big strong black guy. Now i'm not trying to be stereotypical but he looked like he was the no s*** kind of guy. I could hear what music he was listening to and it was Gangam Style. I somehow surpressed my laughs a little and made a mental note to tell someone who would care. I arrived at Vicoria Station and walked to the hotel which was pretty much next door. I ran into my grandma in the lobby and we both gave each other a big hug and of course got a little teary. I remembered her Spanish accent and the feeling of her hug and immeditely noticed that I was now a few centimetres taller than her when she was taller than me before I left. We couldn't go to our room before 3pm and it was only around 10am. We started organising the next few days straight away and before we knew it, we had bought a 48hr hop on hop off tour bus pass and we were seeing the sights of London!
We were really lucky in that the weather was perfect. It was sunny and at least 21 degrees. We saw nearly everything that day (from the outside since 2 days in London is not enough) and also went down the river Thames in a ferry. Finally we reached home exhausted. I can't remember every individual thing we saw because the whole thing is smushed into one. My Grandma and I went out for dinner at a nice restaurant near by and we went to bed feeling exhausted.
Sunday 16th:
We both woke up around 4:45 am for some unknown reason and had a nice chat about what it's been like etc. That was really the only time we had to chat properly as the rest of the time we were running around. We ate our dissappointing buffet breakfast (haha yes I know i'm being picky) and headed off back into the city on the blue line bus; which takes you to places that are kinda way out of the city. We went past Harrod's to find out it opened at 11:30am and we were there at 10am so we gave it a miss. My Grandma wanted to see Princess Diana's memorial fountain and can I say that it wasn't what we expected. Due to the weird layout of the paths at the park, my attempt at directions and that fact I forgot my Grandma can't walk that fast it took us 2 hrs to reach this oddly shaped circle of cement with water streaming down it. That was the fountain. Us both being a little frustrated we tried our best to find out way back to the bus stop again. We went to Oxford st from there and I bought a few things for my siser. I'm not really a fan of English fashion and I found it REALLY expensive. After eating a late lunch around 3pm at a steak house we worked out way to the London Eye. The view was nice but I guess I was used to the Danish landscape by now with beautiful fields and the forests and the water and the flowers that stretch for km's. So I wouldn't call it beautiful just modern. Once again, we got back to the hotel room and prepared to go eat Chinese for dinner. YUM. Another big day was over and unfortunately it was our last together. I fell asleep as soon as I hit the pillow and then dreamt about Steph being posessed by the Devil. Yes, it was a lovely nights sleep.
Monday 17th:
The day we had to say goodbye. We woke up at 6am and ate brekkie together before a rushed goodbye. My grandma was rushed onto the tour bus and so I was standing out the front of the hotel getting all teary before running back up to the hotel room. I walked around the local shops a bit and then started my journey home. It had been a big weekend and it was a great experience. I missed home and was excited to see my family again and tell them everything we did. I arrived at Skørping station and my sweet boyfriend met me there at 11:30 at night and walked me home. I was tired and but happy and so I had a good sleep in till 10am the next day :)
I woke up Tuesday morning and was greeted by my host sister. We ate breakfast and spoke about my trip and caught up with each other. My host mum left me a sweet note on the table and I was eager to see her again as well.
That was another adventure that was unexpected but so worthwhile. I'm glad my Dad brought it up and that everyone helped me get there. Everyone was so kind, the Hammonds and my host brother and of course my parents and host parents for helping me organise the whole thing. It was so nice to see my Grandma again and to see another foreign city.
After being in London I think my dream has changed a little, I'm leaning more towards studying in Aarhus now but I need to get off my lazy ass and speak Danish otherwise i'll be back at sqaure one in a few yrs with the language.
I'm home again and back at school and tomorrow I'm off to Sweden with some AFS people very early in the morning. Should be great and i'm really excited to get to know the newbies a lot better :) Then on thursday I'm going to the theatre with my class to see a Danish play in Danish. Yay, time to test the Danish skills. Friday I have Nina's fødselsdag fest which should be great. Then we're in October and that much is booked out. Time flies...
Hope all is well xoxox
