Yesterday we had a good riding day to Malmo. On our way we crossed over the sea via 2 long bridges; the bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden was 10 miles long which included a tunnel but the bridge was a relatively low one, so I coped very well!
We found the hotel which turned out to be on the heart of the old town but we didn't discover that information until we had been out walking for 4 hours and stumbled our way back to the hotel!
We had arrived too early to book in so we changed into our sightseeing gear and left all of our clobber in the left luggage room and set off to explore.
We visited a lovely park which again had a windmill - just like in Bremen, and then went into the castle which had to be the most surreal thing since we went to the Dali museum in Antibes.
The castle itself was extremely ugly with the extensions to the 15th century remains built in 1937 being awful! The exhibits inside the castle followed no rhyme or reason and just seemed to be a random collection of things which had no correlation with each other. We did find out that it was the prison for the 3rd husband of Mary Queen of Scots. He was supposedly been haunted by a black cat wailing every night- could this be where the saying a black cat crossing your path is unlucky ?
After our time in the museum which ended with a visit to the aquarium and nocturnal animal floor we went off to find the marina.
Reading all the info on Malmo there were certain sights not to be missed such as the connecting bridge to Denmark, walking in a park, visiting the castle and viewing the twisting torso high rise office and residential architectural masterpiece; all of which we did, nowhere did it mention the nudist beach but of course Colin found it! We never did find the marina but discovered a beach with a pier and a cafe. After partaking of a sneaky beer Colin discovered that at the rear of the pier there was a segregated nudist beach-we moved swiftly on!
After much pavement beating we decided that as we couldn't find the marina we would return to the hotel, which was easier said than done! We did however find ourselves walking through residential areas and places where locals hang out, eventually we found ourselves in the centre of the old town where our hotel was.
We had booked an evening meal with our room rate as we knew how expensive eating out in Sweden is. The menu was not extensive but obviously the meatballs and rice were good value as we watched many other guests helping themselves to 3 or 4 courses and that was before they started on the puddings!
After eating we set off again to find the marina, we bought some beer at the Co-op by the train station and drank it on a bridge when we couldn't find the marina! Returning to the hotel we commented that perhaps we should have selected hotels with air conditioning as well as hair driers, as the room was very stuffy and sleeping with the windows open enabled us to eavesdrop on many drunken conversations- such a shame we couldn't understand a word!
