I smell. But not as bad as I thought I would judging by people's reactions. I expected to walk on the bus and everyone gasp in horror. I didn't have time to shower as the bus leaves at 12 30 and my ship got back at 12 25 (due at 12 15). It is hard to relax to the kiwi mentality when you know how anal bus drivers can be about leaving times.
But I did it! I arrived successfully after a grand weekend in the woods. It wasn't exactly the wild since all the paths join onto a major huge one which you can do in sandals and there are no dangerous critters. Except those damn sand flies. But they are more likely to kill you from the secondary means of falling in a river head first after knocking yourself off balance from a bridge trying of swat the pesky black dots of doom off your arm/ankle/neck/other imaginary place where you feel itchy and assume it is one. I am itchy now. Must move on.
Because I got up so early when I didn't need to that first day I was shattered and fell asleep on a bench in the lovely sun in the cosy campsite since there was no one here to talk to. I couldn't stay on the lovely beach long because of; guess what? SANDFLIES! Even with log sleeves, trousers and 50% deet. The little... When the ranger came around I woke up and decided to go in the tent for a proper sleep. Pretty hard considering I packed light with not much padding so my bed was, well, pretty hard!
The walking was beautiful and the beaches fairly nice but only as nice to e as he ones in Thailand. So I plodded along with Stephen Fry in my ears learning about him and enjoying the scenery; thinking about the science behind it. At one point I thought I had found an Ent but I may have imagined it. Like when you see faces on the front if cars. I woke up several times last night knowing I had to get up before the tide which no one controls so you are at it's mercy! I did make it though. Don't worry.
I got to the beach early or my water taxi, (which was late) so decided to sunbathe, the sand flies had other ideas so I went for a swim instead, possibly why don't spell as bad as I thought I would. The water was pleasant, and I questioned my ability to swim. At least I think I would need retraining before renting any kind of Olympic competition. There was no swimming backwards into coral reefs this time so maybe I am improving... Or there are not coral reefs at Abel Tasman. I came out of the water drew a Griffin in the sand whilst I dried and briskly hopped on the boat when it arrived!
