Yesterday we left on our trip to the Ring of Kerry. The first day was pretty uneventful. Twenty QU students and twenty Loyola MD students boarded the bus to what was supposed to be a quick two hour trip to Cahersiveen, but we took the long way. We stopped at Crag Caves which was an underground cave tour, it was cold, dark and went. It was a little creepy! After we got to the hotel, were fed a nice dinner and got to go to our rooms. Putting three best friends in a hotel room is always a good idea!
Today was the "exciting" day. We woke up early with intentions of seeing a lot in Co. Kerry. Except it was raining, which we thought, "oh no biggie it's Ireland it rains ALL THE TIME." No. No, it doesn't rain like this in Cork. It was MONSOONING. And then we had to drive across the bridge to Valencia Island...
As we were driving along a windy, rainy cliff in the bus our WINDSHIELD POPPED OUT. Yup. THE WINDSHIELD. We were twenty feet from the edge of a CLIFF. A windy, stormy, HURRICANE WAVES COMING UP 100 FEET cliff. Like how did this happen? Nope not funny at all. It was terrifying. There was also a point in time that the lady suggested it was safer to stay ON THE BUS. False. One QU girl got off and the rest of us followed and sat in the grass until the next bus came. I was not a happy camper. How is it safer to be on a loaf of bread bus next to a cliff than sitting in grass behind a hill?
After this fiasco we headed to a museum on the island. Why are we still on this island you ask? No clue. As we were getting off the bus the tour guide told us to HOLD ON TO EACH OTHER because the winds were so strong and we were at sea level. Oh GREAT!
The weather in Cahersiveen was so bad that we couldn't complete the rest of our activities for the day AND we couldn't even go into town because it was closed. BECAUSE ROOFS WERE BEING LIFTED OFF.
So what do you ask three best friends stuck in a hotel room do? Buy some Bulmers, watch some rugby and snuggle.
Cheers from rainy Kerry,
Al
PS. For everyone wondering how Mom reacted to all of this, I waited until we were back on the mainland to tell her.
