Pingyao
Wednesday 11th November
Pingyao wasn't originally on the itinerary but Marion was going anyway and it turned out it was on the way to Xi'an, so it would break up a very long journey.
The 7.30 train arrived in Pingyao round 15.30 during a heavy snowstorm. Marion had a hostel booked and the man picking her up offered to let us leave our bags there. However no taxis were running so the only way to get there was walking. We put our heads down against the snow and followed as quickly as we could, through the old Ming city walls into Pingyao.
Now I know I have said that everywhere I have been has been great, but this place was truly, truly amazing. It was a village completely made up of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, unspoilt by any modern building whatsoever. It felt as though we had stepped back in time, heightened by the fact that it was buried under deep fresh snow.
The hostel was a stunning courtyard property, reminiscent of an alpine lodge. It served gorgeous coffee, which warmed us up before we braved the cold again.
We climbed the town watch tower, which was centrally located. From here we could see the courtyards and beautiful roofs. We were up there as the light began to die, and the shops and houses lit their red and golden hanging lanterns. As the snow continued to fall, the whole town looked magical. Then, for some unknown reason, fireworks exploded in the distance!
We found a gorgeous restaurant, with a beautiful interior and lighting, and enjoyed the local speciality of 'cats ear noodles' (no cats were harmed in the making) and mountain noodles. We went for a final stroll around the city walls before returning to the hostel at around 8.
The hostel had an open fire around which were placed several comfortable sofas. A multinational group of us, including Luca and Barbara from Slovenia, gathered around and shared biscuits and hot chocolate. A lovely memory.
We had a 23.30 train out of Pingyao, bound for Xi'an. Although we only had an afternoon/evening to enjoy the town, I feel as though this place will stay with me forever.
