Back in Chile again!
Crossed the border to Chile a few days ago and decided to go to a small town called Pucon. The town is surrounded by beautiful lakes, mountains and a few (still active) volcanoes! One of the volcanoes quite close (Llaima) actually erupted while we were here, but luckily it was not that close to Pucon, so no danger!! Waited out a couple of days of rain, before the sun came out again and we could do an extreme activity! We decided to climb the closest active volcano Villarrica [2847 metres high] (it has not erupted since 1984) - see picture... We and our equipment (provided by the tour operator) jumped in a minibus at 7 a.m and started the climb one hour later. The total climb and descent was about 7 hours (5 h up and 2 1/2 down). The ground was old magma and snow and ice on the top. Halfway we had to put crampons on our shoes and climb with an ice axe. It was really tough and physically challenging! I did not make it all the way up, just about to 2600 metres (pretty good anyway, right?!), and Tomppa struggled to the top of the crater. Spectacular views from the volcano and it was a beautiful and sunny day! Both of us were totally dead though when we came down and when back at the hostel we just had a quick shower and fell into bed...
Today our muscles are quite sore and we are just spending a day doing nothing much, just enjoying the sunshine and warmth that finally arrived to stay for a while in Pucon. Packed my warm clothes deep inside my backpack, becuse tonight we jump on the night bus to warm and sunny Valparaiso, west of Santiago. There we will spend a few days just chilling out and taking in the sun an warmth! Take care you guys, back home! We will see you pretty soon...
