Today is our final day in Ho Chi Minh before heading to Nha Trang, so we decide to head off around town to see some of the major attractions.
Our first stop was a park where Hannah and Mariela played on some of the exercise equipment. Then off to the market. I had intended to buy a pair of bikini bottoms as I had stupidly left mine at home, but Hannah was nice enough to lend me a pair.
Ho Chi Minh City Museum
Formerly Gia Long Palace the museum is located a couple of blocks from Reunification Palace. It originally started as a propoganda museum and houses some artifacts from the Vietnam War along with historical pieces from city life. Unless you are a massive history buff or speak vietnamese you can probably give this one a miss. The museum is mostly in Vietnamese with very few to no English translation, making it rather difficult to know what you're looking at and why. 1500VND entry.
War Remnants Museum
Definitely a must see if you are ever in Ho Chi Minh! I would compare it to Teul Sleng in Phnom Penh to those who have been there and seen it. Very informative as to what went on during the Vietnam war and just how horrendous the Americans were during that period. Get ready for an emotional couple of hours!
The Agent Orange room is painted orange which just adds so much more to the emotional impact of walking into the room. Entry will cost you 25000VND.
We walked past Reunification Palace but weren't interested in going in. It is a museum style visit and I think we were a little overwhelmed by the war museum to continue looking at things.
For lunch we stopped off at a local bakery Ngoc had recommended for their excellent sandwhich making. She appeared to have packed up so we purchased pastries instead. Mine had meat and cheese and was delicious. The others had fairly plain options which turned out to be somewhat dry and unenjoyable.
After a stop back at the hotel for a referesh we headed back to Vietnamese Aroma for dinner. The service this time around was a lot slower than when we had been with Ngoc. Or maybe I just didn't notice the first time. I ordered a chicken noodle soup, not Pho but a different kind. It was made with instant noodles instead of rice noodles. I don't think the others realised they weren't ordering real Pho!
Back to the hotel and we were ready for our overnight train to Nha Trang. Ngoc had purchased a bottle of vodka for us to share. We had two 4 sleeper cabins and Ngoc was on his own. The two couples got lumped together while Janaka, Mariela, Hannah and I got the party cabin. We all hung out in one cabin for a couple of hours. It was good fun to just sit and drink and chat and get to know everyone a little better. We mostly listened to Ngoc and stories about his life, and chatted amongst ourselves. Scott and I drank the majority of the vodka I believe. I was probably a tad drunk but when the time came it made it so much easier to fall asleep!
Nha Trang is incredibly popular with Russian tourists, with direct flights from Moscow available multiple times a day. Our train ended up being delayed a couple of hours after some unexpected stops in the middle of no where. It was great however as we got to see the sunrise and got some amazing views of the rice paddies and landscape leading into Nha Trang.
We arrived around 7am and checked into our hotel. Ngoc took us out to have Pho for breakfast at a little local restaurant. Still wasn't overly impressed with the flavours. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong!
All in all my first sleeper train experience was amazing and I can't wait to explore Nha Trang over the next couple of days!
