hi all,
Can't believe i've been here over a week now it has gone so fast! My second day at work yesterday was far busier than the first day, when we arrived at 8.30am there were 10 women all about the give birth and serval waiting,I saw loads throughout the day and got used to weighing the new borns and taking them over to post natal..which is just shocking to see!You walk in this 'ward' which is a fairly big room with rows of bed and find a space to leave your mum and baby that you've just walked over there (in the rain!) there are no less than 2 women per bed but often much more.its just so busy!they are meant to stay there for 12 hours but it would be impossible for that to happen so maybe 2 hours later they go home..have no idea why they stay because they are not monitored or anything but hey T.I.A-this is africa!
We had two babies die today which was very sad,one they knew they couldnt find a heart beat and the other one they left 3 hours for an emergency c section so it was a bit late by then. Very sad and the conditions are terrible.
We have the day off today and the sun is shining so we have come into town, made the wrong decision to look at some beaded jewellery on the street and got followed for the next 20 mins and ended up spending 10 pounds!not like me I hear you say!
We have a lazy day tomorrow and I intend on writing my assignment but we'll see! Then on sunday 6 of us are going for a day trip to a massi village in arusha, sound very interesting and im sure it will make a good blog entry when im back but so far we have been told it starts with them greeting us,then we talk to the women about how they share their husbands and how many goats are sold for a women etc, then we walk into the woods and find some herbal medicine etc(not to try I hope) then we have lunch and do some tribal dancing with the warriors and lastly they kill a goat for us and give us the raw organs to eat (the other girls tell us the lungs are not so good!)and drink the blood!yuk! will be interesting to see how much I try as at the moment im all for trying everything (except maybe the warm blood) but im sure that will change and I will quickly become a veggie for the day!
Booked our safari for next weekend with another girl joining us,off to the serringetti and Ngonorgono carter to see the big 5 fingers crossed! And then we move to Dar es Salaam ready for work there monday morning...am trying to prepare for the heat there but not sure that possible...we nearly died in it the first night there!!!
But hey we have a swimming pool waiting for us!
Kew Heri for now xxx
