Jambo everyone!
So now we have left our lovely hotel and are settling into our house,we arrived yesterday and are now living much closer to town with better access to the interent and we've found a nice hotel to use the swimming pool!So i'm currently sitting here in swimming costum and shorts!weather is sunny but cooler than dar es salaam, still about 25 degrees I think.
The other housemates are all really nice, there are 11 of us just now with 4 coming back from safria in a few days and 7 new people arriving next weekend.I'm on a top bunk bed with another 4 beds in the room..was a new experience sleeping inside a mozzy net-one that will take a bit of getting used to!
We all went out for dinner last night to an ethopian resturant (craming as many as possible into a taxi is also a new experience!)luckly it wasnt far from our house but was a bumpy ride since I was sitting on someones lap! The resturant was nice and before our meal they bring around a sliver bowl and jug and wash your hands before the food is served....very nice and clean!
Did my first load of hand washing yesterday too...my arms were killing me how do people live like this! Can't imagen another 6 weeks of washing clothes!awh!i'm sure its all good for my learning experience though!
The language is fun to learn and tomorrow we will have our first swahili lesson but for now I have learnt the basics and for some reason can say 'cool as a banana, crazy as a banana!'no idea where I will be using that! After being riped off on a dala dala today my next phrase will be...'give me my money back!'
They have a saying here TIA which means 'this is africa' and is said whenever you're wondering why things are taking so long....they dont rush about here and dont seem to work to any time scale! So they just tell you 'TIA' and no worries!
The food is great, especially that which the lovely cook in the house called witness makes...breakie this morning was pancakes with honey and fruit salad (oranges, mango, watermelon, melon, pinapple and banana!). We are looking forward to our first dinner tonight by her which everyone says is amazing food! Just as well we are well fed as everyone walks everywhere, its about 40 minutes to walk to work in the morning and maybe 30 mins into town...followed by 'helpful' people trying to sell us stuff!
Anyways, back to the swimming pool I go,luckly have not burnt yet so my factor 50 must be doing the job (unlike my insect repliant as i'm getting more bits each day!)
We start work on wednesday as its the easter bank holidays here too, cant wait! The stories from the other girls sound like it will certainly be an experience although not so looking forward to the sad experiences I've heard about.Starting on the labour ward I have learnt how to say 'push' and 'dont push' and 'congratualtions'...still need to learn 'I have no idea how to deliver a baby, dont leave me to do it alone!'
kew heri...bye!
