Woke up early to catch the 9.30am boat and bus to travel to Khao Sok National Park. Breakfast was at a surprising little bamboo shack on stilts over the mangroves called Bondi Beach Café and we were served by an Aussie girl teaching English to hotel staff. Toby got to have vegemite on toast and I had a delicious watermelon, apple and mint shake.
More long tail boats, a wonderful way to get around, and 2 bus rides later and we arrived at Khao Sok. We found space at 'Our Jungle House' and we were the only 2 staying there when we turned up! We got Riverside Cottage for 750 baht in the end, on the walk there a snake had crossed our path and the owner said that was a first for her too. It took a bit of getting used to as the cottage was almost open air with gaps between the walls and the ceiling. They gave us a mossie net and coils but both us were still covered with bites from Railay! We were staying right by Sok River and literally on the border of the national park. The owners told us that two months previously wild Asian elephants had gotten lost and wandered into Our Jungle House grounds, park rangers can to be called to move them.
I had my first Massaman curry here, a bit like red thai curry but with peanuts and potato. Toby said he had his best meal so far in Thailand, it was some sort of fresh green chilli and squid. We got caught by lots of rain and ended up staying in the restaurant area for the evening playing games. By the time we got back to our room it was dark. We saw loads of lizards and frogs but the most exciting bit was inside our bedroom- a bat flying around! Then I walked into the bathroom and a huge brown rat scurried away!
We slept uneasily that night wondering what was creeping around our room in the pitch black. There was a thunder storm and it rained all night and the bamboo leaf had a small leak…right over the bed! We were able to push the bed over slightly and I gave Tobes the damp bit.
