Fraser Island
We arrived into Hervey Bay at 1.10pm - our meeting about fraser was at 3pm. so we hung around at Koalas as Hervey has nothing to do.
After our briefing we got chatting to our group, had a good feeling about ours as they all seemed so lovely. We did a massive food shop for the 3 days, alot cheaper than when we shop ourselves.
we had our complimentary dinner then went to pack and sleep before our early rise.
Tues 13th Jan - We were told to be at the back courtyard for 6.30am to get our stuff into the cars and put our bags into storage before going to the marina. we didnt actually
leave until 9 ish which was annoying as why did they get us up so early:(
We had a 35min ferry journey to get to the island and once there went to central station - not here for long as not much to see so got cracking and started our journey through the sand!!
Lake Birrabean was our first lake and to see this really made us look forward to what else was to come in the 3 days, it was so clear you could drink the water and see underwater without it hurting your eyes.
We found a picnic area and had lunch, it also gave us the opportunity to get to know one and other.
After lunch we packed the van and made our way to the 2nd lake, the sandy roads however were so bumpy it was crazy trying to stay still in the seats!! after a bumpy 30-40 min drive we got to lake Jennings discoloured lake that wasnt as pretty but still
nice in a different way to the 1st one. Everyone tried doing handstands in the water, the lads seemed to get competative at who could stay up longest..typical!! Sean and Adam also had this thing they did in every lake with switz lad stefan where they tried to see
how far they could throw him in the water. It was hilarious, the young lad loved it. Once slightly dried we made our way to set up camp, we got to drive on the beach to it, it was unbelievable - loved it!!
Our camp was basically on the beach, a few areas of green where you could squat in for a wee or dig a whole for a 2!!! we were proper roughing it:( Think we will all have dodgy tums as noone went for the latter.
We thought that after putting up the tents and having dinner that it would be late - it was only half 7! It was soo dark so we sat chatting in the camp area and on the beach, the stars were just magnificant you could see parts of the milky way too.
Oh yes and the Wild Dingos come out in force at night - none seen at our camp though:)
The next day we had to be up at 5am!! to leave for 6 to avoid the tide coming in. we had a 2hr drive to Indian head where according to the tour man at Koalas sharks could be seen - we sat for ages and saw none so had 4 hrs with literally no shade on the beach. couldnt
go into the sea due to tiger sharks and jelly fish!! We took a walk to champagne rocks being careful with everystep as jelly fish had been brought to shore:(
Once allowed to leave this beach we made our way to Mabeno Wreck, then onto Eli creek a lazy river which was icy cold pure bliss for us seeing as we were so hot from the 4 hrs stuck at the beach. Once all cooled off we went to lake wabby, it is hard explain but my word it is
just amazing you are presented with miles of sand dunes and a lake that is lush we just didnt want to leave it. The boys ran from the top of the steep sand dune into the lake, causing one lad to hurt his spine!! well boys will be boys no wont they;)
Our second meal on the island was spag bol for everyone par kelly and myself who had chicken, everyone seemed so tired from the last few days so lots of goon was left over...Goon equals horrible cheap wine, easily gets you drunk) when cleaning took place we used the sea as a wash bowl
then moved the oven, leaving one hob on to act as a camp fire for us:) unfortunately this hob was my pain as when it was moved you couldnt see anywhere so i didnt realise when i moved that i was about to step straight into where the oven was, meaning my foot burned reall badly, the pain was too much to bear
the sand stuck to my skin!! typical luckily the next day it was feeling better but covered from the sun:) our final day on Fraser was going to lake Mckenzie...oh my you just want to stay at this lake forever its an amazing clear and pristine lake with white sands around it.
we remained here until 12 had some lunch then waited at the barge before returning back to hervey bay:( Koalas are a company that tries to get as much money off you as possible. Firstly they made out they didnt get some of our stuff back and 2ndly the girl at reception
said I've heard 4 of you havent paid off your bond!
What a total prat why say you've heard when if you work there you should know!!
After not cleaning, showering or sleeping comfortably for the few days we decided to upgrade our room to a double as we couldnt be arsed with peeps coming in and out the dorm so for $20 we got an amazingly huge room with air con tv, fridge, shower and comfy bed, it felt amazing to get cleaned:).
Later that night we met up with our group had a few drinks but after many a yawn we thought it best to hit the hay and go to sleep:)
Wht can we say if anyone goes to Oz you must must must go to Fraser island its truly an experience we'll be talking about for a long time we just loved it:)
