On Monday we got the Magic Bus to Blenheim, the main regional town and centre of the Malborough Wine Industry. On the way we stopped at Ohau Point Seal Colony and had a great view of the fur seals and pups. Once in Blenheim we caught the bus to Renwick, which is a 15 minute drive away, because all of the wineries that we wanted to visit are around this very small town. We stayed at a lovely hostel called Watson Way Lodge which is owned by Pat and Paul. It's a very chilled place with a nice vibe ($52 for a double and a free brekkie of toast and nice jam).
By the time we had settled into the hostel it was the afternoon so we wandered to Mahi Winery, which is within walking distance and had a great tasting with a lovely lady called Deb. We met a vineyard owner and his wife, tasting the wines, who sold their grapes to a local winery so it was nice to have a chat with them. The next day we hired bikes from our hostel ($10 each for the day) and cycled off for a 10.30am appointment with Graham at Dog Point. We got a bit lost and had to call and apologise but we got there in the end. Had a tour of the winery and then tasted the wines. From there we went to Cloudy Bay (Well it has to be done!) and finished with Staete Landt. It was a very enjoyable, if not a bit tiring, day we just wish we had a bit longer so that we could have visited all of the wineries that we wanted to.
Today we got the intercity bus from Renwick to Blenheim in time to meet the Magic Bus to go to Picton but our friendly driver said that we might as well stay on the intercity bus because he was going to Picton anyway. We were glad that we did because we arrived in Picton an hour early and managed to catch an earlier ferry to Wellington. The ride was a bit choppy due to bad weather and I could feel the sea sickness kicking in but it was all good in the end. We're staying at the Wellington YHA tonight and then tomorrow we catch the Magic Bus to Napier. We had planned on checking out the nightlife in Wellington because a guy we met had given us a couple of bars to go to (Vivo-Edward St, Hawthorne Lounge-Tory St & Red Dragon-Beside Embassy Cinemas) but we've had our alcohol fix for a bit. I just want to chill tonight, I've just finished reading Northern Lights (Golden Compass) by Philip Pullman and I want to start Madam Secretary - A memoir, Madeleine Albright (a massive big hardback book that Jem exchanged Atonement for - very heavy) so bye from me lots of love xxxxx
