Our last day in Beijing we set off for the Summer Palace and it was the coldest day so far, the temp dropped and it was sooooo cold! The Palace was beautiful it was just a shame we couldnt feel our fingers! The huge lake was completely iced over! Wanted to stay longer as think we missed quite a bit out but we were just far too cold, -5!
When we got to the new hostel we checked into a 4 bed dorm and were shocked to discover we already knew our room mate! It was a Canadian we had met the night of the Acrobatics! She was lovely and gave us lots of good advice about where to go. Think we woke her up quite alot though, esp Lucy who was above her on the very wobbley bunks! Didnt get the chance to say goodbye to her which was a shame.
Before we left the other hostel we enjoyed our best meal yet from the steet sellers in the Hutong around the corner from the hostel, was under 3 quid for the 3 of us and was soooo good!
We met 2 girls in the 2nd Beijing hostel who we are now with in the Xian hostel, and just about to set off to ride bikes around the city wall (Hmmm none of us have ridden a bike for about 10 years so should be interesting!).
The overnight train to Xian was 12 hours but not as bad as we expected. We had a hard sleeper which consists of an open carriage with sections of two tripple bunks. Vik got the very top one which was about 2 inches from the ceiling and a horrible ladder to climb! The beds themsleves were ok....but just our luck...we were sharing with 2 of the loudest snorers ever! The lights went out without warning at 10 so we had to clamber about in the dark and all the Chinese people seemed to be dead to the world in seconds! The lights then got shoved back on at about 6.15n the morning despite the fact that we had about another hour left to go! Early to bed and early to rise seems to be the thing here! The hostel were waiting at the (crazy) sation to pick us up with a big sign saying "Lucy Marsh' (always wanted one of them!) :)
Hostel's cool, quite quirky although when we arrived the power was off so no lights or showers for us! Luckily came back on about 8ish the same night, just in time for us to get ready to go out..we werent looking forward to doing our faces in the dark! Went to Bar street with the 2 girls and 2 lads, but it was pretty quiet! Was a Tuesday night I guess. So ended up back at the hostel in the girls lovely room (twin with own bathroom) drinking beer and playing card games which were too complictaed for Lucy!)
Just getting some brekkie in the hostel then off for our cycle....
Lots of love xxxx
