MACAU.
For some reason Sta cant locate Macau but there we go!
We arrived at the border between Macau and China after what was possibly our worst journey yet due to an awful sleeper bus with beds only just big enough for very small people and wide enought for stick insects and no loo! When you got on you have to remove your shoes and lace them in plastic bags so at least the floor was clean! We got stuck in traffic for about an hour, all busting for the loo but nobody seemed to be getting off our bus dispite the fact all the surrounding traffic ewas turing off their enjines and stepping out. After a while Rachel went to gesture to the driver that we needed the loo, he understood and led us off and round the corner to pee behind a shed! nice! Once we got moving again we stopped again after a coule of hours for a loo break in a cow shed and some food. Once back on the bus we attempted to sleep but failed due to the size of the beds and the very bumpy ride, i think we spent half our time up in the air! All the lights were off to so we couldnt even read!
Eventually however, after what seemd like a lifetime of being cramped, we got off the bus and crossed the boarder into Macau. Accomadation here is more expensive so we settleded for a budget hotel and moved to an even nicer one the next day as it was vics bday ( we all had doubled beds and towels, it was amazing!). The first night we just had a wander around and went up to the ruins of St Pauls, a church which was burtn down some time ago and is now the main symbol of Macau. Macau was once Portuguise and is famous for its egg custard tarts and cookies! The road leading up to the runis is full of shops selling these cookies and people stand in the street giving out freebies so we ate as much as we could on the way up then had a second fill on the way back down! Mmmm!
That night we randomly bumped into one of the boys we'd met in Yangshou outside our hotel. We helped him look for somewhere to stay (he setteled ona dodgy place which we'd been to scared to take!) then had a wonder over to the Lisboa, one of the many well known casinos in Macau. The hotel and outer building were more impressive than the interior and we attempted to go up to the top to have a look at the views from the window, we failed at this however! This casino also houses the biggest diamond in the world so we had a look (although it wasnt actually very impressive or exciting!)
Next day we met Chris again and headed over to the Island of Coloane, where we sat outside to have lunch in the village, a very quiet and relaxing place compared to the mainland! Ooo and more custard tarts! That night we stayed in and watched TV, as we had a few English channels, a few exciting hours of Without a Trace then off to bed for us. Next day was Vics birthday butshe'd been quite ill through the night with a sickness bug so the poor thing wasnt much better when she woke up! To make things worse it was pouring with rain and very hazy! She opened all her cards (thank you) and the pressies Rach and Luce had hidden under her bed and decided dispite the sickness she was still up for jumping off a building! The Macau tower is the highest bungee in the world at 233M. We headed to the tower only to be told when we arrived it wasnt safe to jump because of the high winds! However, after a while we were all taken up to the top ( even Luce who was too much of a wimp to jump) and after a while were told it would be ok. So Rach and Vik prepared for the big jump (nutters) while Luce went back down to watch with her feet firmly on the ground! Vik jumped first shortly followed by rachel with a big scream! They both thought it was amazing althogh Rach said it felt like her eyes were going to pop out and Vik got the birthday pressent she wanted! Rach nd Luce bought her a nice big chocolate which she loved! However, that night back at the hostel after we began getting ready for Vics birthday night out with a glass of Rose (the 1st wine we've had for a while!)she began to feel ill again, this time with a high temperature to go with the sickness so we ended up satying in and she couldnt bring herself to eat any cake! Poor Vickster! Not the birthday she had hoped for.
On Sunday we headed to Fishermans Whalf, which is an odd place, a 'theme park' with areas designed to look like different countries. Rach and Luce ate a buffet lunch while poor old Vik stayed with the safe option of toast (woo!).
Vik felt ill again so headed back to the hotel to sit down for a while while Rach and Luce headed to the Venetian, a famous hotel and casino designed to look like Venice both inside and out complete with st Marks square and the grand canal.
Vik decided she would be ok to travel to we headed to the ferry to try and get over to Hong Kong. We had all forgotten however that iot was Easter weekend and when we got there there was a huge queue and no ferries to HK Island untill 3 in the morning! Eventually we managed to get a ticket for the midnight ferry over to Kowloon (another HK Island) where we are now staying. We got the tickets about 7 so we had hours to kill! When we eventually got to Hong Kong we jumped into a taxi to Chun king mansions where we are now staying.....
More on Hong Kong later..
