3 Hour Walking Tour commencing at St Paul's Chapel and concludind at 9/11 Memmorial site was a moving experience. I can still remember the day, the morning when I turned the TV on and saw the images of planes crashing into the Twin Towers of the WTC. As the day unfolded in 2001 I knew something was lost in our world that day and we were entering a new era of war and conflict. Beginning in this little Chapel with so many memories of the goodness, generosity, kindness and compssion of those who reached out to others who suffered that day and those who worked on the recovery of items from the burning debris, it was a good place to begin such a tour. It was a reminder that in the midst of suffering and darkness that love and light could exist and bring hope.
St Paul's ministry and presence made a difference, a real difference in the lives of others and helped through practical means to provide comfort to those who laboured for others. Signs of scratches on pews from firemen's equipment as they took a rest and changed their boots, teddy bears knitted for grieving familes, banners given from other states with messages of support, badges from chaplains and firemen, and so many other items lay in memorial in this little chapel as recognition that love prevails over hatred.
The actual site of the Twin Towers has been transformed. The footprints of where the towers once stood are now 2 enormous squares of cascading water into deep inner squares. Names of all who died that day are etched into the perimeter of these squares, a sobering reminder of the great human cost of that day and the ongoing suffering by thousands of families. It was not appropriate to take one's photo against their names, it was not a 'tourist' spot in the normal sense. This was a place of anguish, death and heartache. To be here was to remember, to cry, and to turn one's heart to work for peace and goodness. No words can addequately express what it is like to be here.......
