Just had lunch at Lin Buffet in Horseheads. Interesting town on the way to Niagara Falls. Tour guide says it is a "typical" American town as it shows how most Americans live, in single storey wooden houses in smallish size towns. American flags erected on front prches are a sign that a member of the family is serving in the armed forces, a tangible reminder to others to pray for their loved ones. There's a lot of flags in Horseheads because unemployment is high for young people and one way for children to secure employment is to join the army or navy. This gives them a job and they can also support their families.
The outskirts of Horseheads is forrest, an assortment of trees but mostly pine. Quite a dense forrest, lush, and thick with undergrowth. Outside the town the buildings are dispersed amongst the forrest- quite picturesque. The houses are made of timber, brick is used for other buildings, it is wood from the forrest that is used for homes. Painted in subtle hues they seem to blend into the surrounds.
This photo taken at Watkins Glen, but typical of the forrest along the journey.
