This morning I got up early to check on the weather and see which way we had to take home. At this point we could head east the way we came through St Louis or head north to route 80 if needed. It turns out the storm was still active and it headed straight for St Louis with a projected path East - basically tracing the steps of the route we had taken over two weeks ago to get to this point. After analyzing the weather radar and projected storm path, I decided the safer route would be to head north to Des Moines, IO to take 80 East. This route is going to add more miles to the trip - at the end we would drive an extra 200 miles.
We left the campground near Kansas City and I wanted to drive as much as possible today to make it into Ohio to sleep in the Service Plazas they have with electric hookups for RV's, but we did not make it there. A late start plus another incident where they could not get our receipt at the gas station after we prepaid a higher amount put us way behind "schedule'. I have not mentioned it before but this is the third time this happens to us - at one point they could not even find our transaction. I wonder how much free gas we would get if we just leave without getting a receipt.
We made it into Indiana and stopped at the Visitor Welcome Center. Besides the regular truck/RV parking area, they have a huge overflow parking where we found a spot far from the trucks so we were able to open the slides and sleep well for the night. Overall it was not a bad driving day, after all we did cover 585 miles today. Tomorrow is the final leg and we will be home.
