Sat in the ferry terminal waiting for the 12:30 turbojet ferry to Hong Kong.
Thought we would fill in the journey with a synopsis of Macau. We really liked it and thought it had a gaudy charm. For 2 non-gamblers we had plenty fun. The older Portuguese bits clashed wonderfully with the casino bling. Everywhere was spotless probably due to the tax on the gambling. It was very busy as everyday thousands of mainland Chinese arrived on bus trips. Bars were few and far between because most of the visitors aren't here to drink but those we found were really nice with free snacks and often live music.
The hotel was great and we were at the low end of the market in the shabbier end of town. Food was more complex as there were loads of restaurants but there wasn't much written in English. Our dodgy holiday Spanish was more useful than English as we could sort of read the Portuguese and work out some of the menus and signs.
The level of gambling was well beyond what we've seen in Vegas. You can see why this place is no.1 now. Minimum bets were £20 on the tables. Every casino was very busy. We saw people wandering around with wads of money: not sure if they were winners or pre-losers. There were a lot of games we hadn't seen before with Baccarat and Sic Bo the most popular. There was a game that involved giant dice on a trampoline.
We would come back to Macau as we only did half of what was available partially because we were lazy and sat around the pool most afternoons. It would have been helpful if we had a phase book for Cantonese next time.
