A couple of hours drive and we arrived in Tawau. Main purpose of the visit was both a trek through the Tawau Hills National Park and also a stop off on route to the capital, a mammoth drive to come!
The Tawau rainforest was one of the most impressive we've seen so far, huge trees and dense jungle. Also had a cool river flowing through.
As soon as we got in the forest the rain started, it was about as heavy as standing under a power shower for a good half hour! We saw the World's tallest tropical tree, impressive sight!
After that the trekking continued... As did the rain! Further into the jungle we both started to feel biting sensations on our legs, looking down were were being attacked by leeches!
Probably took about 6 each, at one point all I herd was Sonny shouting in panic behind me, turning round a leech had managed to lock itself onto his infected cut on his leg. I couldn't hold back the laughter so was no help in getting it off!
The rest of the jungle was just as impressive, and just as wet! A new found respect for the forest today!
Lesson learned though, if you're going to trek though dense jungle, wear the proper clothes! Not flip flops, elephant shorts and a vest!
That night after a shower and clean up... Found not only a leech crawling across the hotel table, but also a baby one still on my toe!!
Next day and 7 hour drive to the capital... Last big road journey of Asia!
