First day of the road trip took us around some amazing mountain drives. First big stop was the highest mountain in Borneo, Mount Kinabalu!
The peak of the mountain was covered in thick cloud but still an impressive sight, we drive up as far as we could and had a look around the view point. On the way down the clouds cleared for an amazing view of the rainforest! Did a little trek ourselves as well which was our first taste of the Borneo forests.
The drive continued onto Sepilok, an area with various conservation projects working alongside the natural rainforest. Full day of driving, glad to check into our hut!
The next few days in Sepilok were amazing. Visited the Orang Utan sanctuary and Sun Bear sanctuary on the first day. Both rescue the animals from either deforestation or humans with the aim of eventually releasing them back into the wild.
We got to see lizards, snakes, monkeys, orang utan's and sun bears all up close, both in the sanctuary's and in the rainforest they are attached to. Amazing seeing them in their natural habitat. At one point we were within touching distance of an orang utan!
The next day we visited the Rainforest Discovery Centre. This area of rainforest included both a big canopy walk so we could experience the canopy tree top as well as a ground level trek so we could see the lower ground. Great experience and about 6/7km trek in total.
2 days we won't forget and what a great start to the road trip!
