Wow i can't believe our stay in New York is almost over!
On Saturday we went to washington square which is a really nice little park then we went to Katz's deli in the lower east side and had these huge pastrami sandwiches. Quite possibly the best sandwich ever, the pastrami was amazing, it melted in your mouth mmmmm. The place is really famous, motto: "send a salami to your boy in the army" and it's also where meg ryan does the fake orgasm in when harry met sally.
Then we walked over to the lower east side tenement museum where they've restored two of the apartments to how they would have looked in the 1890s, and 1930s which was really interesting. It's nice to see the slightly more personal side of the immigrant story. Then we had a walk around the east village village which is a really cool area, it was so nice round there. By this point the really hot day had turned into looming clouds and it soon started thundering on us so we got the subway back to our hostel to chill out for a bit. We befriended some of our dormmates Peter, Michelle and Kathy (really nice people) and ended up hanging round with them for the evening watching dvds in the living area which was really cool. This hostel (Times Square Beds) is really nice, it only has 12 beds and is run by a chinese family so is really homely - just like stepping into someones apartment
Sunday we got up a bit later then we have been and went for a little walk round the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market where zoe bought some bangles and i bought a brooch to pin my hat with. Then we went for a lovely lunch in Korea town with Peter and Michelle and then headed up to central park to enjoy the sunshine. It was full of people and we sat in the sun and read and it was sooo hot we got the beginnings of a nice tan. In the evening we caught the subway over to Brookyln and walked back over the bridge to Manhattan. The views were absolutely stunning, it almost doesn't look real because it's so familiar, it's really beautiful though, unfortunately not all the pictures came out that well on my camera but never mind. I was knackered by the end of that walk though but it was still so hot that on the bridge was lovely cos there was a bit of wind.
Today we had breakfast at the empire diner which is a proper 30s style place and we zoe had a bagel with cream cheese and i had eggs and bacon mmmm. To be honest a thought the place was a bit lacking in atmosphere but that might have been because it's a monday morning. Then we got the subway downtown and got the circle line ferry to liberty island (which we didn't bother going onto but the journey there gave us really good views of the statue of liberty) and over to Ellis island which is really interesting, it had loads of information about immigration over the years and lots of personal stories from people. Afterwards it being lunchtime we went up to little Italy and had some lovely pasta.
Tonight we're going to see Albert Hammond Jr and then early tomorrow it's off to San Francisco from where we'll update you soon
