G'day (felt i should get that in somewhere).
Well, we arrived in Sydney at midday on tuesday after a very very turbulent flight and checked in to Wake Up, our hostel. Had lunch, then went for a wander around the city where Alex bought a new phone and i bought a dress. We decided to try to save some money by eating in so that night we enjoyed a delicious meal of salad and bread before going to sleep early because we were knackered!
On Wednesday we wandered from our hostel to Hyde Park and the Botanical gardens, a lovely walk which took us up to the opera house and the harbour bridge. Now I havent been too impressed with bridges so far in this trip, i found both golden gate and harbous pretty unremarkable, so we didnt stay there for long. We had lunch by the Quay and then walked to an old area of Sydney called The Rocks where we saw Sydneys oldest house (just looks like the bungalow opposite my house, nothing special) and went to the Observatory where we learnt lots about astronomy, watched 3d space movies, saw venus through a telescope and had great views of the city. Then we went shopping again to buy jumpers as its quite cold here really, i hope thats some consolation to those of you in the uk with the terrible weather.
On Thursday we took the two hour train ride to Katoomba, the gateway to the Blue Mountains. The moment we stepped off the train this wave of coldness hit us, and i realised wearing flip flops in the mountains in winter probably wasnt such a good idea. We had a nice day riding the sightseeing bus, and going to scenic world where we travelled on the Skyway which had beautiful views of the Blue Mountaisn and The Three Sisters rock formation, and went on the worlds steepest railway (pretty steep). There were loads of walks you could do but we were cold so we just had lots of tea instead. It truly was a remarkable day for hot drinks. In the morning Alex and I both experienced our best ever hot chocolates - called 'Real hot chocolate' - where they give you chocolate button type things and hot milk and a mug suspended over a candle so you melt the choc yourself then stir the milk in....... it sounds really complicated doesnt it? But it was special. In the afternoon we went to an antique tea room which had over 3000 teapots on display and enjoyed devonshire tea and scones with jam and cream, again pretty special. On thursday night we went to the hostel bar for happy hour and then out to some bar in Syndey with some of our dorm mates which was fun!
Today (friday) is our last day in sydney. We plan to go to the powerhouse museum, darling harbour and take the ferry to Manly before coming back for our 13 hour overnight bus journey to Byron Bay which we are not looking forward to!
Hope all is well at home.
Love Zoe and Alex
