Heading out on our own for a few days, Jeannie, Jim, Dylan, Nathan and Carmen off to Murcia to meet Carmen's family and a swim in beach! We meet up again in Barcelona on Wednesday. We arrived in Granada this afternoon after a medium speed train ride from Madrid. A daunting start, absolutely no-one and I mean no-one spoke English! Even in a tourist zone, like the main rail station, no tourist booth. The lady on the booth checking us through to the train eventually translated "gay fiftin" and then "corch fif". Comparatively, we treat our tourists with dignity, and at least we attempt to help. Now the Hotel Palacio de Santa Ines, an exception to the Spanish rule. The hotel was once a palace built in the 15th century. A lovely courtyard in the middle with three floors of rooms (I think only 18 in number) and a view of the Alhambra which is very close, walking distance. The current managers are lovely people who couldn't do enough for us too, one of the girls took us to the bus station and translated for us so that we could get the bus ticket to Seville tomorrow. An absolute gem of a girl and a credit to their tourism industry. Our accommodation is in the very old Albayzin area which is a UNESCO world heritage site and holds a mix of ancient christian and muslim architecture and design throughout the area including the cathedral and the building which is now the university campus. The attached is the amazing cathedral or Catedral they say. We had a fascinating look at the tombs of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I who where Catholic monarchs who conquered the city and decided to be buried at the site of their victory. Granada is a mix of the old and new ... and would you believe snow capped peaks of Sierra Nevada less than 40 kilometres away and quite visible. Temperature today was in the mid to high 20's so the fact that the snow is so close has no bearing what-so-ever! (d*** has his beanie handy, just in case, anyway) Tomorrow we are off to the Alhambra and then to Seville, Barcelona on Wednesday afternoon. Hey! They have two sinks in the bathroom here, a tall one for d*** and a short one for me ... its too short though, I may as well wash my bum in it ... Stay safe all :)
P.S. from now on too, I will call d... Richard so we know who I am talking about!
