Hi all, we're in Singapore now after 6 days in Malaysia...
When we last left you we were about to go to the Boh Tea Plantation. Saw huge tea plantation owned by a Scottich family that exports Boh tea, dunno if it gets to the UK but its apparently sold in Oz... went in and saw the factory where they crush and dry the leaves, and got good views out over the valley. The plantation is worked on not by Malaysians (who apparently dont like working any more) but by Indonesians who come over to work for a few years. then we went over to a strawberry farm, had strawberries and cream - and even Tom enjoyed them!!!!
that morning we got the bus to KL about 10 am - we were up early for the tea!!!! about 4 or 5 hours later we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Our hotel was in the middle of Chinatown - and was aptly names the Chinatown Inn. We had no windows which is a bit disconcerting, but other than that was a nice room. That afternoon we walked to Central Market, then saw the KL Tower and decided to walk towards it - at the bottom of the hill a free shuttle bus was waiting for us - a nice surprise! Up we went in the lift to the top of the 4th tallest telecommunications tower in the world. The lift travelled at 22km/h!!! makes your ears pop - we thought we might fly out the top in a charlie and the chocolate factory kind of way! Got some good views of KL as the sun went down and nice nighttime cityscapes - especially the Petronas Towers. then we went back to chinatown for dinner - about 10pm! - this restaurant actually charged us for using the wet towels they gave us at the beginning of the meal - what a con!
Monday morning we wanted to go up the Petronas Towers but unfortunately that is the one day of theweek it is closed - so we went shoppoing in the mall underneath it instead - then walked out to the Lake Gardens fo a nice relaxing afternooon. That night we had some real malay food out in the 'Hampstead of KL' and then saw the old station and independance square.
Tuesday morning we got the bus to Melaka - a nice old town originally settled by the portuguese - apparently the language they speak today is still a mix of malay and portuguese - went and saw the maritime museum, and A'Famosa fort, where the protuguese hid when the dutch invaded. theres an old chapel on the hill in the fort, most of which is still standing now, but seems to have become more of a market place that the locals try to sell souvenirs to the tourists. that evengin we went to a small night market for food - very cheap!!
on wednesday we got another 5 hour bus to Singapore - arrived here in the afternoon, after a stroll around chinatown we all got ready and went for a Singapore Sling in raffles - the first round we had in the main lobby of the hotel, then went up to the Long Bar to meet the rest of our group - Yvette then had a million dollar cocktail also! saw a good band there also, playing 70's and 80's covers! then we headed over to clarke quay and had dinner by the riverside before walking home.
on thursday we took the MRT (mass rapid transport) to orchard road - the main shopping area - but avoided all the shops and headed over to the botanical gardens where we stayed most of the afternoon - a good long walk. then we went over to little india for dinner and one of the nicest curries ever!
yesterday we took the cable car up to mount faber for some good views of the harbour and sentosa island, before taking the cable car onto the island - very high up over the water. once there we took a luge ride down the hill and a ski lift back up - after lunch we headed down to the beach for a swim and then a cycle along the beach on a tandem! not as easy as it looks!!!! after a bit more swimming for Tom and some lying down for Yvette, we sat and watched the sun go down before heading back on the cable car then over to chinatown for some Peking duck!! yummy!
today we're gonna head over to Changi for a bit of history....
Hope you are all well!
we will try to get photos up eventually once we find a decent computer!
