Hello everyone, for America part 2:
Since we left you last, we've had a mixture of action packed days, and nice relaxing days:
On Wednesday last week, we left the hostel in flagstaff reasonably early (about 10am!) for the drive up to the Grand Canyon National Park. Once into Grand Canyon Village, you are immediately hit with a wave of tourists parking their cars everywhere they can find, but if you drive around a bit further you find that everyone has parked in the first carpark, so theres lots of space further around. After driving to one or two lookouts and taking numerous photos, we then took a shuttle bus out the western side of the village, and started to view as many viwpoints along the way, getting great views from Maricopa Point, Mohave Point, Powell Point, The Abyss, Pima Point and Hermits Rest, walking some of the way and taking the free shuttle between the other points. Apparently it is out here that most people watch sunset from , so to escape the crowds we headed off before then, and caught the sunset from Grand View point on the way home, with some of the best views we had all day!
On Thursday it was time to head back to LA, but not without a little detour - we headed out to Arizona's Meteor Crater for a walk along the crater rim and a little look in the museum, before starting the long (8 or 9 hours) drive back to LA, and this is where the beginning of the relaxing days begin, as we have been taken in by the kind hospitality of Yvette's Uncle Patrick and family, so we havent had to worry about hostel and dorm rooms or anything like that!
On Friday we felt particularly lazy (mostly due to the long drive and the heat, so just had a short walk and a drive around Redlands ( a city on the eastern side of LA where we are staying).
On Saturday it was Aunty Grace's birthday so we headed out for breakfast at her Aunt's house, then in the evening for a chinese meal with the family.
On Sunday we dropped the car off in Northridge (the other end of LA - about a 2 hour drive away) and then went to see Hollywood on the way home - the walk of fame, the mall at hollywood/highland - for views of the sign (which is much smaller than it looks on TV) and then went to the Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium for a bit of fun (such as two headed baby, an 8 legged lamb, 5 legged calf, a two headed goat, the tallest man, and loads of other crazy things.
On monday we went to Six Flags Magic Mountain - a big them park that has apparently the best roller coasters (more exciting than disney)... and the roller coasters were great - when they worked!!! in the day we got to ride 6 rides, and of that 3 kept breaking down whilst we were queueing - for one we queued for 3 hours!!! but it was the best ride there so an hour waiting per minute riding seemed worth it aterwards!
On tuesday we heaed to the beach, just north of Newport beach - to Huntington Beach where californian surfing began - a bit quiter than newport but lovely sand and big waves making swimming great fun!
Today we have not yet achieved anything. We may go to the cinema, we may not.
Tomorrow we head back into the city so our ride to the airport is shorter on friday, and hopefully check out sunset strip also.
Take care, check out our new photos!
Yvette and Tom
