From Alice Springs we booked onto a 2 day bus trip to take us to Adelaide with an overnight stay in a place called Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy is one of the funniest places we have been, you feel like you have been taken back in time. It is an Opal mining town and is known as the Opal capital of Australia if not the world. What makes it funnier though is that about half the population of the town live underground! The place gets so hot, apparently it has reached temperatures of 57 degrees celcius in the mid day sun-yikes! So they discovered that it is a lot cooler if they go underground. We did a tour of one of the houses and its crazy, it has everything that a normal house has but its underground and the temperature stays constant all year round, day and night so they don't need any heating or air conditioning. They buy and sell their houses just as normal as well. Also, if they decide to extend their house and they come across Opal then that is theirs to keep. Apparently one guy in the town was extending his house and stumbled upon about $1/4 million worth of Opal-jackpot!!!!! The countryside is just littered with big piles of dirt where people have been digging for the Opal, it looks really strange. On the night dinner was included at the local Pizza bar and then some of us ventured to the other end of town (about a 5 minute walk!) to go to the local Karaoke! It was hilarious, just picture the scene, you are sitting in a mining town where the people live underground slap bang in the middle of Australia watching an Aboriginal guy singing Eminem on karaoke!!! It was surreal!! So after that fun packed night on the town it was back to our underground dorm room! 2 days and 2 very sore bums later, we arrived in Adelaide! We only stayed in Adelaide for a couple of nights so didn't get to see so much but what we did see was nice. We had a walk through the city and saw the park and the river which was really pretty. We also had a walk around the Adelaide Oval which is no where near as big as the MCG but slighly more picturesque. On our last afternoon there we caught the tram to Glenelg Beach which was lovely, and had a few hours topping up our tans! Next stop Great Ocean Road...
