It was time to move on again to Ilha Grande, it was a bit of a mission to get there. We were a little hung over and had to sit on a local bus for about 2 hours with all our stuff. It was totally packed and then we had to find a boat to take us to the island. We finally found this beautiful old style wooden yacht which was going over so we all jumped in and an hour later we had arrived. We found really good accommodation when we got there. Everyone was saying you have to book before you go because it's so busy but there was so much accommodation over there it was fine and we only paid $60US a night for our own room which was cheaper than some dorm rooms over there.
The main beach near the town is full of boats so we trekked on the first day to Lopez Mendes which was about 2 hours. It was so beautiful once we got there, white squeaky sand, surf and hardly anyone on it. We spent the day there and hired a surfboard which I must say I had not done since school but with Junior's help I got up a few times. We could have walked back to the town but we decided to get the boat back which was $7US and was only going to take an hour. Perfect. That night we went out for a meal with Jason, Tamar, Sergio, Gan and Wilma. It was quite nice.
Because we enjoyed Lopez Mendes so much we decided to go back the next day but this time catch the boat there and back. We spent the day on the beach playing frisbee again with our mate Jason a guy we had met Paraty. It was just Junior and I on the boat on the way there which was beautiful and so relaxing but on the way home was a different story. There were loads of us on the boat and we could see a storm coming. As we got closer to the town the waters got rougher and rougher. We hit this massive wave and the boat tipped so much I almost got fell off the bench I was sitting on so I started freaking out and had to sit on the floor. Then it started raining and got really cold as everyone was getting wet and the winds were crazy , people started getting sick (for a change not me) but we just had to keep going. The captain was very chilled about this whole situation and was not yet handing out the life jackets. I really thought the boat was going to flip but Junior assured me saying "It’s cool babe you can swim". I said “Yes I can swim but not with 40 other people and a boat on me!” Finally we made it around the point and it was not as rough but still it was not a fun trip back. That night we went out for a meal with the same crew to a pay per kilo place which was good.
Our last day in Ilha Grande was just beautiful we went on a boat tour which took us around to the other side of the island. We had 3 stops at different places which were all just amazing. We went snorkeling in crystal clear water, swimming with turtles, spotted rays and then we saw these massive star fish as you can see Junior is holding on in the photo. (naughty) It was such a wicked day and very relaxing which was good as we headed to Rio the next day. We caught the Rio transfer which took us from Ilha Grande to our hostel in Rio. I highly recommend this as it was only about $40US and 3 hours. People that did it on their own took hours and hours.
