Wor*l*ds
- A couple weeks before my Maritime roadtrip I describe my pseudo planned itinerary to my friend, Paula (who had went to University in Nova Scotia). She gave me a puzzled look and said, "I don't think you have any idea where you are going. Look at a map!!" (I did look at a map but i think it may have been crooked.)
- A couple days later Paula to me, "I saw on TV that the newest way to travel is to stay at truck stops. You have to sleep in your car but it's only $5 and you get a free shower!!" hmmm… let's call this Plan B. Although it might be a great place to find a date for the wedding.
- 10 days (ish) before departure I can not find my flight info in my email account and wonder, I DID book my flight didn't I? hmmm... Phone call to Porter confessing that I couldn't remember if I'd actually booked the flight. "No problem, I can look that up for you." ahhh.. aren't you helpful. "What's your confirmation number?" maybe not so helpful. I then explain (again) that not having a confirmation number was really the reason for my call. "Oh right.... Well if you DID book this flight, what credit card might you have used?" did I detect a hint of sacrasm? The end result - Flight had indeed been booked and confirmation re-sent. Thanks Porter!
- About a week before my trip, my son Rain says to me, "I really hope your plane doesn't crash mom." um thanks Rain, me too!
- Wednesday (3 days before flight) I pull out my suitcase and think either it has shrunk or my clothes have gotten bigger.
- Thursday (2 days before flight). Me and kids walk to my friend Lynda's house who has graciously offered her HUGE in style (it's cheetah print) and HUGE in size suitcase. Then we walk our new pet cheetah home through the park. Now I can bring more shoes!!
- 1:15pm Friday (day before my flight) - At some point I should really look at a map.
- 4:15pm Friday driving back to the office from a home visit in Brampton - WTF was I thinking when I scheduled a home visit for my last afternoon before 2 weeks off and how am I ever going to wrap up before 6pm.
- 5:50pm Friday - aw screw it - good enough - I'm not THAT important around here. Leaving the office to go straight home and pack.
- 10:43pm Friday - creating new playlists is almost the same as packing, right?
- 6:55am Saturday (flight is at 9:30am). Maybe I should have printed or mapped out directions to Halifax from Moncton? Maybe I should have printed out my hotel information? Or my car rental reservation?
- 7:00am Saturday - Wait a minute… I did print some information out … now where did I put that?
- 7:40am Saturday - Does anyone else feel weird about riding in the back seat of a taxi when you are the only passenger? I always ride in the front - it's easier to carry on a conversation.
- 7:59am Saturday while waiting for the ferry to the airport. Wow - my suitcase is way huger (yes that's a word, I majored in linguistics) than anyone else's in line. They must only be going away for a weekend…
- 8:45am Saturday in Porter lounge - how many free Starbucks lattes can i drink before I lose my privileges or will be removed by plane for reasons of caffeine overload? (LOVE the Porter lounge!)
- 8:46am Saturday in Porter lounge - am I the only one with a purse full of tea bags and cookies? (again - LOVE the Porter lounge!)
- 9:20am Saturday just settling into my seat - the mother in front of me hands her 2 year old a chocolate bar.
- 9:27am Saturday - mother in front of me says to her 2 year old, "Why are you so rambunctious? The plane hasn't even taken off yet?"
- 9:45am Saturday - 2 year old in front of me screams at his window "BYE DADDY!!!" awww cute …. the FIRST time.
- 11:04am Saturday - seat mate asks me if I'm a writer (I've been scribbling in my spiral notebook all flight). I said, "no, just journaling with high hopes to blog." Him: "why aren't you just typing in your laptop?" me: "I prefer to write by hand and then I transfer it over to my computer later". Him: "oh, do you hire someone to do that?" …clearly my Walmart shorts and CBC t-shirt give off that I'm really important look.
- 11:43am Saturday (45 minutes until landing) I decide to put my pen down and get organized. I take out my bag of tourist literature and pull out the maps of Moncton, Nova Scotia and Halifax. I think about how I should use them to determine how I might get from the Moncton airport to my hotel in Halifax but then my "what to do when you're in PEI" guidebook caught my eye and the maps got pushed to the side …. yet again. I did however put those road maps separate so they'd be handy for when I actually needed them. At this point, I am living on blind faith in my borrowed GPS (thanks Mom and Dad) which I may or may not know how to work.
- 12:19pm Saturday just about to land. I have to Pee!!!!!
