Arrival in Moncton. What an easy flight - love to Porter!
Beth's Timely Text #1 (arrived about 10 minutes after my plane had landed) - "What time is your flight?"
Beth and I shared excitement over being in the SAME province as I waited to pick up my pet cheetah (aka - humongous suitcase!). The Avis counter was conveniently located (yeah small airports) and I was very quickly handed keys to my 'new' Ford Focus. The nice girl at the counter gave me directions to the highway, which I scribbled on my receipt and headed off reciting directions to the location of my car (go to the wall, trun left, through the doors, across the driveway and to the left). Once there I took out all of my road trip essentials: iPhone, charger, GPS, water, snacks and maps.
hmmm...
'1' car lighter + '2' chargers that fit the space (iPhone and GPS) = a bit of a dilemma.
GPS or Music? I would call it Sophie's choice but I'd be lying. There was barely any doubt that music triumphed over directions. After all, I had my handwritten directions to get to the highway which I'm pretty sure the girl said would take me all the way to Halifax…. so why would I need my GPS? I plugged in my phone into the lighter but realized I couldn't find the little hold in my stereo to plug in the auxiliary cable thing that provided the music (yup - I'm super techy)-- *sigh* No playlists.
In hindsigh,t at that point, I should have plugged in my GPS but I was distracted by the realization that my Fusion was equipped with Sirius Satellite radio … perfect!! (GPS? What GPS?)
Beth's Timely Text #2 (arrived as I was checking my mirrors and just about to head out) - 'Drive safely!' ahh thanks B!!
The highway was very easy to find (thank you Avis girl) and I gave a whoohooo as i set off for day one of my Maritime Roadtrip Adventure!!
I flipped through various satellite radio stations (Ace of Base, anyone?) taking in the army of trees that surrounded me and occasionally wondered if I was really going the right way. Since passing the initial signs when I got on the hightway there had been no more indication that I was actually going to Halifax, or even Nova Scotia for that matter. (Little did i know just how common this 'not knowing if i'm going the right direction' feeling would be for the next week).
About an hour into the drive (I think), I officially entered Nova Scotia (hooray!) and about a minute after that I landed the CBC R3 satellite station. Fu@&ing Right!!!! This was definitely a good sign! Not to mention I had managed to catch the R3-30. Oh Happy Day! (did I mention that I am a complete CBC R3 addict?)
I did realize (somewhere in the back of my mind) that at some point I would need to figure out how to get the my hotel but I had time (almost 300km!) and so rest areas, information stops all came and went as I sang along blissfully to Hannah Georgas, Kathleen Edwards, Dan Mangan …
Eventually I ran into my first road trip direction dilemma. The signs on the highway read: Halifax (via bridge)- veer left. Halifax (no bridge) - veer right. Ah damn. Maybe I should pull over.
Beth's Timely Text #3 (about 3 minutes after I pulled over) - 'Where are you?' - LOST - haha!!!
So I spread out my maps (which really only help if you know where you are) and plugged in my GPS (which was giving me the cold shoulder after ignoring it for so long),then I resorted to my favourite of all gadgets - my iPhone. Sure enough, in a matter of minutes, I had directions to my hotel and I took off again excited to be so close to my first stop!
